The RTD’s ACORN’s work preserves old homes that otherwise might meet wrecking ball is a long look at ACORN‘s role in saving the Peay House and houses on Venable Street.

ACORN deals with problem properties. Many are in such rough shape or encumbered with complicated title issues that most people don’t want to bother with them.

“We’re not just facilitators on these properties,” said Jennie Dotts, executive director of ACORN. “We control who we sell the properties to and we set the timetable and standards for renovations.”

Hurrah for ACORN !

I would like to thank ACORN for this work and its assistance to other community development entities throughout the City.

If you are renovating your old house and have pieces that you have had to have removed, there is a program you can use to donate these things to ACORN’s attic. Just call them

There is a follow-up to this in the Letters section of the RTD today: ACORN Works To Better Richmond

The renovated home above is my home 2235 1/2 Venable. I recently added pantry cabinets to my kitchen. When I removed paneling from the wall there was no insulation and daylight shining through. Before purchasing the home, the builder told me they insulated every place that was accessible. I found out this was not true.

I do praise ACORN for what they did in saving my home and what they have accomplished in the area….great job. I don’t know what ACORN’s standards are for insulating a home. I would recommend to them and to renovators to put efforts into energy conservation by insulating homes as best as possible.
