The Valancourt Books tumblr has a great post on the “Milam for Pure Blood” ghost sign on Venable Street:
“Milam for Blood, Bone and Skin. Contains no Potash, no Calomel or Mercury in any form. Contains no Alcohol, no Opium, Morphine, Strychnine, Arsenic or other dangerous ingredient. This remedy, in private practice, has been successfully used since 1864 in the treatment of all diseases arising from Impure, Impoverished or acid blood.” … “Used in the treatment of Rheumatism, Eczema, Chronic Sores, Catarrh, Poison Oak or Ivy, Ringworm, Tetter, Boils, Carbuncles, Pimples, Anaemia or Impoverished Blood, Caries or Ulceration and decay of the bone, Uric Acid and Contagious Blood Poison.”

I wish all of these old painted advertising and business signs could be restored. Really adds to the historic fabric of the neighborhood. Wonder what it would cost to restore the Milam sign.

I am all for restoring these signs too. The art is from a bygone era and not even sure if there are commercial artists around qualified to restore them?
The last time I saw anything similar was in New Orleans in the late 1970s. This involved full size billboards where instead of pasting up printed panels they actually painted the sign with photo realism in such large scale!
This reminds me… I wonder why they repainted the sign on one of the converted cold storage buildings but never the other one?
