Church Hill featured as one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Richmond

Patrick shared with us a Sarah Ramsey article from neighborhoods.com. He writes:

Patrick here with Neighborhoods.com, an online real estate resource that believes finding the right neighborhood is as important as finding the perfect home. Every day, more and more people are ditching their car and opting for other transportation options. In theory, this is great, but who really wants to walk that much? That’s why we published an article on Richmond’s most walkable neighborhoods and featured Church Hill!

Below is an excerpt- read more on their site:

The heart of historic Richmond is a hot area, with houses and condos selling quickly and new businesses opening up. Be warned, though, that the hill in Church Hill is no joke: the charming brick sidewalks lead you on quite a climb coming up from the river bottom.

If you like your fitness outside of a formal gym, walk over to Libby Park and the steps that lead down to the Capital Trail and Rockett’s Landing. For a reward, head down the hill to Whisk for croissants, WPA Bakery for pie and cake, or Sub Rosa for fresh baked bread.

I came to CH from South Florida where safe places to walk are few and far between so it was love at first sight! I love walking here in every season, even in winter when the leaves are down changes the view so there’s always something to see.

Saying Church Hill is walkable and focusing on the historic/libby hill area is so interesting. As a resident of Church Hill, I think of the boundaries to be much larger; hence why some of us have shone frustration when the news talks about shootings in Creighton Court, and attribute the incident to “Church Hill”

Most of Church Hill I would not want to walk around in, especially at night.

I don’t see myself walking north down 25th, past the police precinct and open air drug market, to go to the new grocery store. That is Church Hill, and it is walkable, but is it safe? That’s more important to me.

Gentrification and sky high rent will do that

Whilst I live in and love all Church Hill, certain areas tend to be highlighted more than others. Makes me laugh when the house for sale flyers appear on our door and the pic is a young white couple walking down a nice shady street.
Walk around during Halloween…that’s an eye opener for the neighborhood.

@6 – Right – the bum row of the 1100 block of 25th is so terrible. Wish there was something to be done about that block. It’s been getting worse – the bums are getting pushed from other areas I think and really congregating there. I feel bad for them (sometimes) but it’s really intimidating when it’s close to 30 people in a group hanging out (and they’re often drunk and pretty boisterous). There’s some new development going in on that block, but it’s such a draw to the loiterer types. I hate the convenience stores on that block – it seems like some of the owners are coming from outside the neighborhood and don’t really care about the effect their businesses have on people who actually live there. And why on earth is there an ABC store there???? The state should totally close that.

The carloads of kids being dropped off in the Broad and South areas for Halloween don’t live anywhere near this neighborhood. They come from north side, eastern Henrico and the nine mile road area. I’ve asked them and they stated they come over here because more people are handing out candy.

So what if kids come from other areas to trick or treat? Where they live they might not celebrate Halloween the way we do. The same thing happens in the Fan on West Ave. They’re kids! Don’t demonize them.

@9 MP – the crowd that hangs around ocean grocery and the police Precinct is is pretty rough looking, but I think the business owners and police tolerate them because they’re all pretty much harmless. I think any conversation about “doing something” about people needs to consider why they’re where they are and doing what they’re doing. For all we know they congregate around that corner/block (as opposed to somewhere else) because the police presence makes that kind of socialization safer. I have walked through there at night on occasion and suspect it looks much worse than it actually is. You should google “Hamstersdam” (a place/policing experiment from the tv show the wire where the police allowed drug dealing but heavily policed against the violence associated with it. Not sure that’s what’s going on here on 25th street – and it’s mostly just alcohol – but it’s an interesting thought)

Oh, and I’ve heard that that particular ABC store is one of the busiest and/or most profitable in the state. May be an exaggeration, but I doubt it’s going anywhere

We are on 25th and O.
I wish we would get more kids for Hallooween. We over the top decorate and buy a ton of candy. Two years ago we had 17. Last year 13.
Seems all the action is closer to Broad St.
