The first big name poll of the Richmond mayoral contest (PDF) has Joe Morrissey with a significant lead over the other candidates:
In the crowd of eight candidates for Richmond’s next mayor, former Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney and House of Delegates member Joe Morrissey leads with 28% of the city-wide vote, followed by former Venture Richmond Executive Director Jack Berry with 16% of the vote. Current Richmond City Council members Michelle Mosby and Jon Baliles stand at 10% and 9% of the city-wide vote respectively, followed by former Secretary of the Commonwealth Levar Stoney with 7% of the vote. Former Richmond councilman Bruce Tyler has 4% of the city-wide vote, while Lawrence Williams and Bobby Junes each has less than 1% of the vote. Nearly a quarter (24%) of Richmonders say they have not yet made up their minds or don’t know who they will vote for. These are the results of a survey of 600 registered Richmond city voters conducted August 18-24 by the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University. The survey has an overall adjusted margin of error of +/- 4.9%.
Our take?
- While we did say “Never underestimate Joe Morrissey”,
- this is essentially a name recognition survey,
- so look for the other candidates to really ramp up campaigning after Labor Day.

@chpn Why do you call this essentially a “name-recognition survey”? Looks like it goes beyond that to positive, negative and second choices.

@StyleWeekly most folks haven’t started paying attention this early. Most responses are based on name recognition more than anything else.

I’ll tell you something, he has been the only one to knock on my door to “press the flesh” (shake hands), and introduce himself. He is taking a line from Tip O’Neill’s playbook, in that all politics is local.

Joe does indeed “press the flesh.” Generally with underage girls. And when he knocks them up he can just pay the family hush money, then lie about it in court.
The man ought to be in jail.

Joe Morrissey…Hillary Clinton…Terry McAuliffe…Barack Obama…they’re all disgusting and corrupt. Lock ’em up!
Wonder if he wins whether he’ll hold a moratorium on the violence threatened to us boaters when we pull up to his boat dock on the river. Party at Joe’s houuuuuse!
