@17, I would suggest you tone it down a bit. Reva is a perfectly decent councilwoman IMHO. I’ve actually met and talked to her many times. She was the ONLY member of council who came to the candlelight vigil for Mongo when he died in 1998. Our own council rep. did not attend that candlelight service in Libby Hill Park.
Reva probably has her own reasons for the statement, but it may not be a bad idea. For all you know, the suspect’s family is already muttering about a lawsuit ’cause he was mentally ill, which was supposedly the reason police were called to assist with the mental health authority to begin with. If that is the case, it would have been a good idea to have cameras to prove that the police were just defending themselves. I suggest you not be quite so quick to judge, please.
From what I’ve read, the mayor, the chief of police, a large extended family for the officer who was shot, and many others were all crowding into the hospital. I’m pretty sure there is ample support for the officer already.

Trammell’s words were only to support the officers of the RPD. Why did Eaton speak to her and not our own council person? Maybe because Trammell is approachable and returns phone calls. No other council person has spoken up. Before you knock dust off your shoes on her doorstep, try talking to the woman.

A veteran Richmond police officer was shot and wounded Friday after exchanging gunfire with an armed man who opened fire on the officer soon after he responded to a call of a man experiencing a mental health crisis in a Fulton Hill neighborhood, authorities said.
Master patrolman William “Bill” Turner, a 31-year department veteran, was shot multiple times by a man whom police described as the subject of the 2:30 p.m. mental health call in the 4400 block of Fulton Street. Although wounded, Turner was able to return fire, striking the gunman multiple times, police said.
Obviously Officer Turner was not a novice, as he had 30 years of police experience. This situation spotlights how dangerous public safety work is every single day. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Officer Turner, and THANK YOU for your service!

The Richmond Police Department has identified the suspect in yesterday’s officer-involved-shooting that injured the officer and the suspect.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. yesterday, officers were called to the 4400 block of Fulton Street for the report of an adult male suffering emotional issues.
The officer pulled his vehicle over at the location and approached the subject – who fired on the officer. The officer returned fire. Both individuals were injured by gunfire and were transported to VCU Medical Center. Their injuries are considered serious but not life threatening.
The suspect has been identified as Tamar X. Harris, 20, of the 800 block of Old Denny Street. He is in police custody and warrants have been obtained but have not yet been served due to his medical condition. The warrants are for aggravated assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Chief Ray J. Tarasovic would like to thank the community for the outpouring of concern for the injured First Precinct officer, a 30-year veteran of the Richmond Police Department.
Re: body cameras: you may consider the view that body cameras protect the police from wrongful accusations of misconduct. And in that way support the police. To assume that body cameras are anti-police is to assume the police are hiding something.
I’m confused – why are you all arguing over body cameras, bullet proof vests, and Reva Trammel, who is not even our freaking city council rep, when a RPD officer, who has served most of his 30 years of service in the 1st Precinct protecting you and your property, has been shot TWO times in the line of duty??
