A new sub shop, Str8 Out of Philly, opened Saturday at 306 North 29th Street. Rolled by yesterday but they didn’t seem open. Anybody been?

I hope it is str8 out of Philly. I would love a good Cheesesteak.
I was just about to ask that same question! I went by yesterday evening as well and they were closed. Looking forward to stopping by to see what’s available.
Tried for lunch today but not open.
Isn’t that the same place as the Soul Food restaurant that also was never open? I think it’s a better concept but they’ll need to actually be open to make money. The name is pretty bad but I am enthusiastic about the possibility of a sub shop. Hope they get it right.
I live across the street and talked to the owner over the weekend. He only opened on Sat to give out samples. The true opening is supposed to be tomorrow. I tried the Turkey Sub he had out Sat and it was delicious!
And yes, he says he’s from Philly, and is bringing a real Philly Cheesesteak to Richmond with Cheese Whiz and Amoroso rolls!
Heaing that whiz and amoroso rolls are involved is a good step towards a good cheesesteak. Look forawrd to trying it. Go Phils!
I met the owner on Friday but could not make it to the opening (which was exclusively free samples, not a formal opening). He seemed very friendly and said they intended to be open between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m.
What’s up with these “restaurants” opening up here that have been given names based on texting standards?
It’s a catchy name. Can’t wait to give them a try!
Oh hell yes. I am craving a cheesesteak right now.
had a sample Sat. it was excellent. looking forward to visiting again.
Well, if it’s str8 out of Philly it’s a hoagie shop, not a sub shop. That being said, if this place is truly getting Amaroso rolls and Cheez Whiz oh YES will it get my business (grew up in Jersey, went to college twenty minutes outside Philly).
It’s all about the Amoroso rolls! I grew up in Philly (visiting there right now!), and can’t wait to check out the hoagies! Maybe soft pretzels are right around the corner? Hires Root Beer, anyone?
I’m planning to visit this place tonight…I’ll provide an in-depth breakdown of my experience tomorrow:)
I got a cheesesteak. It was biiiiiig, and goooood!
What I can’t figure out is why the “new operators” park *IN* the street in front of the shop instead of along the sidewalk like everyone else. I’ve talked to the gentleman four times now… Not really a way to get local support. 🙁 I was looking forward to a consistent business in this location. The message I get is: We don’t really care about anyone but ourselves. :/
JLM – I’m a lot more concerned with how their food tastes than where they park. They can park right in the middle of Broad for all I care if they can run a decent hoagie shop…
It’s that good. I’m now starting to think text message names are actually a good sign. Got the “half” Italian sub and it was spot on. Generous helpings of good quality meat on a good sub roll. The naming is a bit misleading as the “half” was a foot long sub generously stuffed. Large fries, sub and drink for $10. They also have a good lunch special for $5. Highly recommend! Menu to come once I get power back.
Wow! Got the “half” cheese steak with everything last night and it was delicious! The half is 12″ and the large is 18″. All portions were quite generous and the meat was of good quality. The owner and the get who was cooking last night were very friendly and wanted to do what they could to make sure you got what you wanted. I think they are of a different mindset than Buffington’s. Menu looked good and they are working on delivery as well. HIGHLY Recommended!
Thanks for sharing, Alex. Can’t wait to try these guys out!
I definitely second SEW’s comments about the owners being super open to feedback. They seem to be taking note of what is working in the community and what isn’t and I see good things for them. It helps that the list of things they need to fix is small. I can see this being another Alamo once the word gets out – great food, can eat often, good owners and a great value.
Don’t let the prices of the large subs fool you like they initially did with me. A half is more than enough to fill 99% of people and lunch is an even better value. Good hours, delivery coming and a community that needs a sandwich shop badly. They should do very well once people find out about them.
I officially can care less about their parking now and feel embarrassed that their welcome to the community was some parking nag coming to bitch about where they parked. Hopefully they’ll forgive us and realize that the rest of us are glad they are here. Park in the middle of Broad from here on out guys…
Great reviews. I am hitting this place tomorrow!
Great lunch today and friendly service. Definately a keeper!
Holy Hell. Stopped in tonight after seeing them posted here. It was amazing. I got the half philly cheese steak with fries. The cheese steak filled me up, and I’m a big guy. Had a bite of the fries, which were not the best, but its fries, who cares. The owners/staff were very friendly. I don’t care where they park and I don’t care what they call the place. Amazing food and friendly owners will always get my repeat business. Go there. Tell your friends.
I stopped by Str8 Out of Philly this weekend – they are definitely a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The place looks great, the staff are nice, the food is absolutely amazing and prices are reasonable. I highly encourage others to check it out!
Went there today, and it was wonderful. It was very much like Philly. I will be a regular customer at this shop. Good food and awesome prices. The people working there were very nice as well.
I went there tonite and got the italian. It was delicious. I hope they are as successful as Alamo. I will definitely be going back to try their cheesesteak. Now if we can just get a Starbucks up here.
I went by Saturday an 12:35pm. Closed. Hmmm.
I went there around 3:30pm and they were open.
Just went and got some cheesesteaks for lunch. Delicious. Will def. be back. Churchhill was in DESPERATE need of a good sandwich shop. This fits the bill.
Kaykay, the door is hard to open at times but I’m pretty sure they were open yesterdy around then.
The sign said “Closed” and it didn’t appear anyone was inside. Also, there weren’t any lights on. Do they have posted hours?
kaykay we do not have any signs that say closed we were open until 10
WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUPPORT DURING OUR 1ST WEEK OF BUSINESS, THE RESPONSES AND FEEDBACK WERE GREAT! HOPEFULLY WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE AN ASSET TO THE COMMUNITY!
The hours are Tues through Sun, 11am to 10pm.
Got a Cheesesteak hoagie and It was AWESOME!!! super stoked about a good hoagie shop in the hill, we need to support these guys. They are super friendly and make the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had outside of philly. I WILL be back time and time again, Get the word out…….THIS PLACE IS BOMB
I had a wonderful cheesesteak. Thanks again guys!
After reading all of the rave reviews here, I finally got my cheesesteak yesterday- it was DEEE-LISH (and enormous!). The guys are super nice and excited to be in our neck of the woods. A welcome addition to the hill!
I posted this the other day but for some reason, my comments aren’t going through.
Went in on Sunday and I second, third and fourth the reviews. We got two of the half cheese steak hoagies (I forgot they were so big!!!) They were delicious. Service was great! Will def. be a family favorite!
I actually loved the fries as well, although, the metal and condensation made them soggy by the time I got home. Other then that, DELCIOUS!!!!
When your comments disappear, it means that they’re getting caught in the spam filter. Drop me an email to murden@gmail.com when that happens and I can fix it.
If only they served falafel, I’d have no need to go anywhere else.
tried this place myself on Sat evening and agree with the other posts…a great cheesesteak!! Am curious about one of their other menu items…what exactly are pizza fries?
Anyone know if they have vegetarian options? Before any naysayers comment, Coppola’s has proven that you can make some rockin’ veggie subs, but I’d much rather support a neighborhood business than go to Carytown (or the CBD).
Amy, they do have a grilled veggie sub. Haven’t tried it myself but I think it includes, peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc.
Can anyone publish their menu here on CHPN? Seems like I am always in too big of a hurry to stop and look when I have driven by. Thanks!
I live pretty much across the street from them and I came home at lunchtime and they seemed to be doing a rocking business. Definitely hitting it up this weekend!
Dude. I’m craving it.
Good to hear that word is getting out. Repeat business shouldn’t be a problem to get but their location is a little hidden. The only downside will be that there will be a longer line when I go but I can live with that if it means another successful business in the area.
Welcome to the neighborhood. I envision a great championship party when the Phillies claim the world series, and again for the eagles and then the sixers…
Just came from there. If you haven’t gone, the cheeseteak is big and amazing.
If we get a wing and beer joint on top of everything else we have now, I’ll never need to leave the Hill once I get home from work.
Heading there again tonight (fat kid loves some philly cheese steak). I will grab a menu and post it tonight.
Looking forward to menu posting!
i love this place. i’m about to call and order. it is so good.
Here is a link to the menu.

It is so wonderful to read the great reviews for this new eatery. The owner is an old friend and indeed knows a thing or two about philly cheesesteaks, and they are delicious. I will definitely be hitting them up again for the Italian.
Ate there last night. The people were nice and the Philly Cheesesteak reminded me of my early days in Philly. With a few more Philly items on the walls- this place will claim a place in my regular routine!
Preface: I was born a skeptic. But upon reading the rave reviews…I had to try it.
Good stuff! Delightful… They keep it simple, and make a delicious product. (Note to Buffington & Wine…)
This place would fit perfectly at the Buffington location.
AS OF 07/05/11 STR8 OUT OF PHILLY WILL START DELIVERING IN THE CHURCHILL AND DOWNTOWN AREA. DELIVERY WILL START AT 11:30 AND END AT 9:30 ON TUES-THURS, FRI AND SAT UNTIL 2:00 A.M. AND SUN UNTIL 9:30!
#58 – Good lord, the great news just keeps coming! 🙂
Hosanna! Does this mean I can order a REGULAR hoagie and it won’t be hot with mayonnaise on it?!?
Oil and vinegar, hot peppers on the side please!
I am such a fan of Str8 Out of Philly! I’ve been several times in the past month and have been impressed every time. I wouldn’t mind having smaller sized drink options, condiments available near the tables for eat-in dining, any maybe a second side choice such as onion rings or tots. I think the food is amazing, as does my native Philly boyfriend, and it’s definitely a shining star in the neighborhood.
Restaurants are popping up all over The Hill — Buffington, OMG, Roosevelt, among them. The phone number for STR8 OUT OF PHILLY at 306 North 29th Street is 804/771-1978, according to Google. It does not appear on the menus posted above.
There is a family run restaurant with a similar name (Straight Outta Philly)on Old Oyster Point Road in Newport News, but it has no connection with the Church Hill operation.
STR8 OUT OF PHILLY NOW DELIVERS IN THE CHURCHILL AND DOWNTOWN AREA. DELIVERY WILL START AT 11:30 AND END AT 9:30 ON TUES-THURS, FRI AND SAT UNTIL 2:00 A.M. AND SUN UNTIL 9:30!
Where is Churhill? thought neighborhood in the eastern part of Richmond was called Church Hill.
So that means you guys be delivering to the VCU area??
Pleease say yes…..
you can see the current delivery area here:
http://quicknessrva.com/delivery-maps/str8-outta-philly/
When they say giant… they mean GIANT… I was eating for 2 days… different meals…
I’m from SE PA and wanted to check this place out after all the buzz. Well, it may not be truly like the sandwiches up north, because you cannot dupilcate the bread. I’m not talking about Amasoro rolls (they come from a facility big as a Sunbeam factory).
But, I will say this – YUM. Church Hill has a legit place for sandwiches at this point. Value & service were great! Support this joint…
bike delivery hours for Str8 Outta Philly are currently only:
Tuesday: 11am-4pm
Wednesday: 11am-4pm
Thursday: 11am-4pm
Friday: 11am-4pm
which fits in perfect with the lunch special!
just sayin’…
STR8 OUT OF PHILLY WILL STILL DELIVER IN THE EVENING ON TUES-THURS, FRI AND SAT UNTIL 2:00 A.M. AND SUN UNTIL 9:30!
so you deliver all day but only rock bike delivery for a few hours?
one of those bike dudes gave me your menu…does that just mean they are doing your dirty work or did they choose to only work lunch for ya’ll?
Great hoagies last night!
Captain Buzzy’s is the worst
DO TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES STR8 OUT OF PHILLY WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, SORRY FOR ANY INCONVIENCE!
I called to confirm the comment above before it posted, and it’s true – they will be closed until further notice. Something about permits, will be working Monday to get everything straight.
this gives me the sads.
hoping they get reopened soon. i just had a sub on Wednesday and it was delicious, as usual.
Found out about the closing the hard way when I went to get a cheesesteak tonight. Get back soon, you guys!
No! Please come back. Hope you get it all worked out asap.
Leave it to the government to hassle a successful small business. This is why they need to charge 11% meals tax — so they can afford to keep all the permit checkers employed…
Alex that is the flippin truth. Hope they re open soon.
Maybe it shut down due to trademark infringement problems. After all, its name is practically the same as an existing business in Newport News (see entry #62.)
It also may be because they had tables which they are not zoned for. To go only.
As per the officer who came to the store, the complaint was submitted by a person from the community and it was a property management issue and not a STR8 OUT OF PHILLY issue or any of the issues listed on this site. The property manager went with me to city hall to resolve the problem. It is our plan to reopen on Tuesday as schedule.
Good to hear that you got everything resolved quickly!
Some of our neighbors need to get a life.
#84 thanks for checking in, as you must have noticed this blog is important for transmitting neighborhood news! Also, it’s good for your business to post here, keeps us all informed instead of guessing. Good luck with getting it straightened out. I haven’t been in yet, but will soon, and have friends who have been in and loved it. I recommended it to another friend the other night who was trying to decide where to get dinner to go.
Has Str8 out of philly reopened yet? I’m anxiously awaiting my chance to try one of their cheese steaks!
Post #84 said they planed to reopen yesterday…did that not happen?
Sorry for the delay everyone we are waiting to get reinspected by the health department, what happened was the name I decided to go with first did not match the name on my health permit so I had to change the name on the permit so now they want to reinspect the facility! Once that is done we can reopen, the problem with that is we donn’t know when they are coming, but we hope real soon.
Gotta love the freakin’ city…What was that saying? “Richmond…open for business” Yeah…right.
Good luck to you guys! Ya’ll are the best thing that’s happen to this neighborhood in quite some time!
HEY EVERYONE WE FINALLY GOT THE DATE FOR OUR INSPECTION AND IT IS OUR PLAN TO REOPEN MONDAY AT 12:00 P.M.IF EVERYTHING GOES WELL. DUE TO US BEING CLOSED FOR A WHILE WE WILL OPEN THIS MONDAY AND THEN RETURN TO OUR REGULAR TIME, THANKS EVERYONE FOR BEING PATIENT WITH US!
I’m dying for a cheesesteak. Any chance you can open sooner? 😉
CAN’T WAIT TEL MONDAY
Can ya’ll at least slip me a sandwich out in the alley sometime this weekend? I need my fix…
I promise I won’t tell anyone at City Hall.
#95 ==> Cheese Steak Junky!!!!
LOL
St8 Out of Philly is open. Got my Italian Hoagie. Happy!! Happy!! Happy!!!
We’re back better than before!!!
What’s up with the phone recording at 440 pm on a beautiful Friday afternoon?
Has this place closed? I tried once again to call (Sunday, August 28 at 1950 hrs) and all I get is an answering service. Website site says it closes at 10 pm. WTF?
Possibly hurricane related?
They were open Friday evening, but were busy with takeout orders and people like me getting to go orders in the store. They probably shut down due to the weather over the weekend. You should probably either call a few times or just head to the store if you really crave a cheese steak.
i’ve had a problem getting through as well. i think at times they close to take deliveries, i’ve seen the owner locking up and hopping in his truck as i walking down the street about to pop in a place a large order. i don’t understand why they would do this if they use quickness as their delivery service though?
seems like a bad idea and good way to lose out some business.
EXCELLENT Cheesesteaks! Can’t wait to go again!
I have never had an issue with STR8 Out Of Philly. I only go at lunch, but they are always there when I visit.
– The Other James
The owner lives and breathes cheese steaks and is as close to Omnipresent as possible. H E double L, he might even be Omniscient, at least on the cheese steak front Or that has been my observation.
Sport’s Radio 910’s Wes McElroy will be on location tomorrow at Str8 Out of Philly From 11A-12 with give aways come join us and enjoy a cheesesteak!
