a short history of the Central Lunatic Asylum
The Fairmount area contained a few non-residential developments prior to 1890 that helped to shape the neighborhood as it displaced them. The most important of these was the Central Lunatic Asylum, built on property originally part of a military hospital during the Civil War. The southern edge of the grounds was S Street, which later became Fairmount Avenue.

Fairmount’s ongoing problems with prostitution and drugs makes the news. So everybody knows that this is going on, now what? More signs? … Another later story also on nbc12 brings to light a spate of robberies last night in Brauers at Brauers Lane and Rogers Street and nearby on North 23rd Street. The Virginia Film Office has a location library of shots from around the neighborhood from what appears to be the early 1990s. The set labeled Church Hill Residential (Rough) caught a bunch of building that have since been fixed up or demolished.

I’ve heard recently that 1) there have a been a rash of day-time burglaries around the 1000 block of 22nd Street (quickly in and out, through the back door), 2) that there have been recent rezoning requests for some of the light-industrial areas between 17th and 18th at Clay Street (to allow for commercial and residential use [aka apartments and condos]), and 3) that Ellwood-Thompson’s has bought the old Chimbo Mart.

Fire Damages Three Homes
An overnight fire at 22nd and V Streets left three homes damaged. Authorities say the first home burst into flames shortly after midnight. Before crews could contain the flames, the fire spread to two neighboring houses. Officials say two of the homes are abandoned and no one was home at the third. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
