Howard, who is being held in the Henrico jail with no bond after his arrest Wednesday, has a long arrest record for home burglaries, according to court records. More recently, in 1995, he was convicted of possession of heroin in Richmond, according to the records.

He was sentenced to five years in prison, with three years suspended.

“There was no known connection, to my knowledge, between Howard and the victim,” Gerrard said. The victim lived alone.

In recent years, Howard worked part time at The Village Cafe in the Fan District.
