a proposal to revisit new construction in Old&Historic districts
Laura Daab is proposing that the Commission of Architectural Review (CAR) change their guidelines concerning new construction in Old & Historic Districts (PDF) so that new homes would much more closely replicate historic existing structures on the block. Saying that CAR does a fairly good job with rulings on existing buildings, Daab states, “I think that they have a lot to learn (or should I say, unlearn) about in-fill and new construction.”

Habitat for Humanity’s Pillars at Oakmont
Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity has announced plans to build The Pillars at Oakmont, 15 single-family, energy-efficient row houses at T and 33rd Streets. Twelve units will be sold at discounts (~$90,000), the remainder will be sold at market value (~$175,000 to $210,000). [via]

send a kid to camp
Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is inviting citizens to help Richmond’s children by sending a child to camp this summer.
“Even though the fees for our summer camps are nominal, there are still many families in the City of Richmond that can’t afford them, especially if they have more than one child,” said Roz Johnson, the department’s deputy director. “This is an opportunity for citizens to have a real impact on our children’s lives by making sure they have something positive to do this summer.”

Look out for the MobookMobikeMobile… For the 2nd year in a row, Books on Wheels will be doing their book/bike thing at the MLK Middle School parking lot on Saturday, June 7 (11AM-3PM). Free books and free bike repair!

reward for stolen binder of discs
An Apple 15″ MacBook Pro laptop and a large black binder of cds and dvds archiving photographs from various clients’ jobs were stolen in a B&E in Union Hill last night. $200 Reward for the return of the binder of discs. The thief may have assumed that these contained music and may ditch the binder.

fire on 24th Street
A fire ripped through a set of frame row houses in the 1100 block of 24th Street today at around 11AM. Four residents got out safely. There is no mention of what started the fire. [via]

double take on Que Pasa
Que Pasa gets reviewed both in today’s RTD and on richmond.com. The RTD piece isn’t positive and says that Que Pasa “has much more potential than is currently realized”. In contrast,richmond.com’s take ends with “while Church Hill residents may want to keep this charming Latin American bistro to themselves, it’s worthy of becoming a destination for all Richmond diners.”

The Over-shadowing Hysteric All Church Hill Yard Sale is 9AM to sunset tomorrow at Libby Hill Park. The Church Hill Dog Park work party is 9AM-1PM at Chimborazo Park. Books on Wheels will be at MLK Middle School giving away free books and free bicycle repair from 11AM-3PM.

Church Hill Alley Rally this Saturday

Volunteers are needed for a Church Hill Alley Rally on 14 June 2008 for neighborhood trash and debris clean up. Meet at the Park House at 2800 E Franklin at 8:00 AM to help clean the neighborhood. a new Echo Harbor proposal emerges
The battle over Richmond Intermediate Terminal continues afresh. A new partnership between the proposed developer of Echo Harbor George T. Ross and restaurateur Michael Ripp offers “a joint project that would include moving Dock Street to allow the shifting of the condominium towers out of the view from Libby Hill Park and expanding public access to the river along the property”. EDI open as cooling center
Due to the excessive heat, the city has opened the East District Center @ 701 North 25th Street as a cooling center. Bottled water will be provided, but no food will be available.
