It’s not easy opening a retail business during an epidemic, which makes us all the happier to welcome Second Bottle Wine & Snack Shop to the neighborhood! Located at the corner of East Marshall and 27th Street, Second Bottle adds another option to what’s become an increasingly vibrant block, allowing Church Hill residents to get a bottle of wine, a pizza, and a salted honey pie, all within a span of a couple hundred feet.
The owner of Second Bottle, Erin Keene, was kind enough to answer a couple questions via e-mail:
What made you want to launch your shop in Church Hill, specifically?
Would you believe me if I said Sub Rosa Bakery? Bread that good can convince anyone to settle here. I had visited Richmond a few times in the “before time” so I had a general sense of the neighborhoods and have always been drawn to Church Hill. When I moved here, I wasn’t sure exactly where the shop would end up, but Church Hill was definitely at the top of the list. I couldn’t have dreamt up a better location.
How has COVID affected your launch?
I have two COVID rules set in place: masks are required and the capacity is limited to 6 people at a time, and all guests have been respectful of these, even if it means they’ve had to wait outside for a few minutes before entering. It is much appreciated to see Richmond’s dedication to keeping each other safe.
What sort of items do you carry, and do you have any thoughts about what you might carry in the future?
Right now I carry a selection of Old and New World wine with a focus on wines that have been farmed responsibly (organic, biodynamic, sustainable). My snack section is primarily tinned fish and a few accoutrements, but the goal is to have all the snacks needed for a proper picnic basket before the summer time.
