This cat was picked up on the 2300 block of East Grace Street on Saturday night by a young woman who was driving through the neighborhood with some friends. She came to our door hoping to find the owner. At that point, there was nothing on CHPN and we had no way to know who the cat belonged to. The good Samaritan decided to take Rosie home with her. We recommended to her that she check back on CHPN for a missing cat listing. Unfortunately, I didn’t get her name or contact information which is truly unfortunate. I’m hoping she will see this listing and contact Drew soon.
Once again, picking up a cat or dog and keeping it in your house for safety reasons does not make it easy for an owner to find their pet when they are walking/driving around the neighborhood looking for their lost pets. Stop helping.
@3 on the other hand, not helping means that you leave the animal open to the chance of being hit by a car or being killed by dogs like poor Goldilocks :(. Hopefully the young woman will look on CHPN and return Rosie. A responsible samaritan looks for the owner and does not assume all found animals are abandoned.
Drew should post on Face book Virginia Lost and Found Cats and also on craigslist. People should have their cats microchipped and good samaritan’s should post on FB lost and found cats or Lost and found dogs as well as take to a vet to be microchipped, and posting on craigslist is also a good idea, however, one should never give all identifying info on craigslist if you have found a pet. You should also ask people to bring you a picture of them with their pet when they come to claim the pet. A picture of your lost pet should be given to animal control and if you find a lost pet you should notify animal control as well.
This was clearly a situation where taking the cat in made sense. To suggest that people should not help an animal in distress is absurd. Nevertheless, it should only be done so responsibly. Checking on CHPN or other taking other steps to determine a stray’s owner are ways to do that. Another Neighbor’s suggestions are right on.
