Anybody know anything abut what’s going on here? The street was only supposed to be closed through January.

The short answer to what’s going on is “nothing.” We live nearby and haven’t seen work crews in a few weeks and before then it’s been pretty sporadic. They’ve opened up a hole that goes about 30-40 feet deep and now it is just sitting open (at least last I checked it was still open).
It appears to be a monumental sewer repair project. Walk over and look down the hole – it’s at least 40 feet deep and cuts through at least two brick sewer pipes. I gotta think the project has turned out to be more complicated than originally thought.
hmmm, there’s an old train tunnel that runs from Jeff.Pk x Church Hill to the ravine btwn Chimborazo Pk & Libby Hill. I suspect that old tunnel has something to do with the complexity of this works project.

It just seems as if it has been a very long time to accomplish the work. I wonder if this problem was in Fan or on Monument Ave if it would take this long ……. hummmm?
It is clear from observing the citys repair projects that they dont prepare for the adequately, nor do they consider the impact of multiple ongoing or unfinished project in an neighborhood.
Take the multiple times that 2 out of 3 east west streets in shockhoe bottom are closed at the same time.
I own the yellow house that all this mess is in front of…the generator’s were put in front June 2009. They are repairing a sewer line that will be run through the alley down to 20th St. In my opinion, the city did not evaluate the infrastructure required to facilitate the new condos completed on East Broad from 21st to 20th St. Some may recall that they actually hit a line that had gas running through it and had to evacuate the entire block including the kids at the Montessori School. They had to dig at least 30 feet down to remove a granite “line” and this was the big problem initially.I would not doubt that they have run into additional problems. I will glad when the work is complete!
I’m surprised they haven’t just put a metal plate over it and called it done. That seems to be the most common way of fixing the roads in downtown Richmond, lol.
Julia H., I feel for you. I often wondered how the person in the yellow house felt about those LOUD generators being there for almost 3 years now. I don’t think I could be as patient. My guess is once the contractor began the project they realized it’d be much more complicated, and maybe even asked for more money from the city….something I’m sure takes a while to get approved.
I’ve actually seen them working daily on my way to work. They are currently working in the ally and this has closed the drive way from both ends in to the Montessori school. .

Well, while they have that giant hole open why not bury the power lines too? Oh right. That’ll never happen.

Erik – my thoughts exactly. If you know you are going to have a project this long, modify the traffic signal associated with it.

@9, I think they’ve done away with the left turn arrow eastbound on Broad-at least that’s how it appeared over the weekend.
