CAR agenda for 9/23

The agenda for the next regular CAR meeting on Sept.23 has been posted and includes items for 401 North 27th Street, 2818 East Broad Street, 3118 East Broad Street, 2102 East Broad Street, 2306 East Grace Street, and 517 North 27th Street. This is different than the special meeting on 9/12 on Oakwood Heights.

Oakwood Heights back to CAR on Friday

On Friday, September 12, 2008, the Commission of Architectural Review (CAR) will hold two special meetings, to discuss the Oakwood Heights project located in the 3600 blocks of Broad and Marshall streets. The first meeting will begin at 2:00pm with interested members of the public. The second meeting will begin at 3:30pm with Fulton Hill Properties and their architect. a proposal to revisit new construction in Old&Historic districts

Laura Daab is proposing that the Commission of Architectural Review (CAR) change their guidelines concerning new construction in Old & Historic Districts (PDF) so that new homes would much more closely replicate historic existing structures on the block. Saying that CAR does a fairly good job with rulings on existing buildings, Daab states, “I think that they have a lot to learn (or should I say, unlearn) about in-fill and new construction.”

Oakwood Heights at CAR #2

The Commission of Architectural Review meeting began on time with about 25 people in attendence. Except for the Oakwood Heights condo proposal, the remainder of the 11 items on the agenda, if not trivial, seemed at least routine: removal of vinyl siding, replacement of exterior doors, construction of an addition, the painting of a facade. The commission ultimately voted unanimously to both deny the Oakwood Heights application to relocate 3626 East Broad Street and the current design proposal for the 33 condominiums.

a better exhibit is all around you

We went to check out the exhibit celebrating 50 years of City Old and Historic districts at the Virginia Center for Architecture, and it is really anticlimatic. As this was billed as “a pictorial exhibit highlighting 50 years of preservation of Richmond’s historic properties and neighborhoods”, I was expecting some dramatic before and after photos. The exhibit itself mainly consists of blow-ups of pages from the Richmond Old and Historic Districts Handbook and Design Review Guidelines (PDF), though.
