Accident causes further delays to 17th Street Farmers Market

ABC8 News reports:

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A driver caused thousands in damage to the 17th Street Farmers Market in downtown Richmond.

Police say a vehicle drove on the sidewalk around the closed-off section of the market, causing damage to equipment and portions of the completed renovation project. The damage is estimated to be around $5,000.

Neighboring businesses say the damage has also pushed the project back five to 10 days, adding that this is an on-going problem.

Renovations to the market began last August.

Nope. Also – are there plans somewhere that show what the project should look like when finished?

I may be somewhat off, but I cannot help but notice that in a little more than two years,a 6 story building at 6th and Cary has been demolished and a 20+ story building for Dominion Energy nears completion. Similar scenario with the new dorms for VCU across from Monroe Park. What we get is a concrete slab killing businesses? It speaks volumes that there is not a soul doing anything in the photo.

Related: I’m worried about the terracotta bull heads from the marketplace. Those things date back at least 140 years to the original meat vendors at one of the three original city marketplaces.

This was my favorite part from the linked article. “Officials hope to complete the project before Richmond hosts the UCI Road World Championships in 2015,..”

They should have left it alone. Money spent needlessly.

I like the concept of what(hopefully) will be the end result but obviously is (was) some very poor planning.

Kay, the Mayor is ultimately in charge of the project – the buck stops with him.

I notice an ad here on CHPN for a pop-up farmer’s market AT the 17th St. farmers market for August 9. I take it that is not going to happen?

And as to who is responsible, I thought Enrichmond Foundation was in charge, not the city. Anyone got any information here?

@20, I would also like to know what the chain is… from the contractor, assuming the City is not trying to GC it themselves, on up.
Although I would add that running a project through enrichmond doesn’t absolve the mayor of his responsibility.

My heart goes out to the business owners in this area- their businesses are being devastated by the city’s incompetence and negligence.

Hopefully, they pull together and slap the city administration with a lawsuit to hold them accountable for this disaster. Stoney couldn’t manage his way out of a paper bag and we have this fool running the city. Good god!
