Quick Update on Jefferson Avenue

From Mary F. from The Jefferson Avenue Task Force:

At the June meeting of the UHCA, Councilwoman Newbille announced that a budget item in the amount of $500,000 for Jefferson Ave. has been included in and approved for the upcoming fiscal year. This is an initial step toward implementing the EPA Greening of America‘s Capital Grant awarded to Richmond in 2015.

The funding for this project starts July 1, 2018 (FY19).

  • A design consultant will be assigned in July 2018.
  • A pre-scope meeting will be held in July with Internal-City Staff.
  • A scope meeting held in early August will be followed with a project schedule.
  • In August there will be a community meeting.

This infusion of funds moves us closer to a safer, greener and more vibrant Jefferson Ave. Each of you gave support to this project at some time during the last four years and we want to thank you. Without your encouragement and vote of confidence, this milestone would not have happened.

We look forward to seeing you at the August Community meeting.

Our sincere thanks for your support.

I get that it comes from an EPA grant but $500,000 is a lot of money and I wish our city could use it for the schools. Don’t get me wrong all this looks great but I think there are more important things we could consider .

Schools are a money pit. No matter how much money they get nothing ever seems to get fixed. Where is all the money going? At least we’ll be able to see the improvement of Jefferson Avenue.

You’re right … the kids will sit in deteriorating facilities with underpaid teachers, but at least jefferson avenue looks good!

City of Richmond adopts $150 million budget for construction of schools $3.4 million dollars for teacher raises not to mention the meals tax that has probably accrued several million dollars already this year…down the memory hole !

It’s not a zero sum game, it’s a city.

IF Jefferson avenue revamp Makes our city more valuable, then the city can bring in more tax revenue the normal ways, and continue to invest both in infrastructure and in policing and schools, all of which, IF done well, should also make our city a better and more valuable place.

What would really be nice is for some of that grant money to go into a type of endowment to maintain what does get installed. The city is horrible at maintaining big ticket items once they are complete, just look at the Boulevard – that street has been completely re-landscaped twice the last ten years (the last time for the UCI) and it is hasn’t had a single weed pulled or tree trimmed since. Why spend money if it is going to go to crap in a year or two anyhow? There is no coordination between these kind of things and budgeting to maintain them.
