Man. Oakwood Chimborazo has been doing so much better.

Actually making a place where working people can work and live . And be like people to each other .
There’s houses and families that are pretty much committed to the life still though … drugs, guns, gangs, more drugs, with little kids being raised in the mix. This block of Oakwood where this happened used to be a full time open air drug market not 5 years back. It looks like the little stretch along the even side — where this shooting occurred — is holding on to that of way of doing. I see the dealing in and out those houses and up in the alley when I go by.
There’s nothing okay about it. Money drugs and guns and little kids means I hear people saying we should count ourselves blessed that a young woman was shot and injured, instead of a baby shot and killed. F that. We can do better. Shut down the dealers here. We all had enough.

What a shame. That area has been getting better. There is definitely a little stretch, where the shooting occurred and two other houses, known for drugs, violence, and other foolishness. Folks need to start calling the police and denouncing those who threaten the safety and wellbeing of others. For crying out loud, this happened right after school ended–kids could have been hurt. The dealers do need to be shut down.

As an older black person living on Oakwood, and witnessing craziness like this shooting, I’m tired. The person that was shot was known to be involved in all kinds of mess. That said, for the folks that are there and want a good neighborhood, call the cops. For the love of God, if you see something or someone doing what prevents good folks from living in peace, call the cops.

I don’t care if you’re black, and have been here for years, call the cops and get their attention if you see stupid stuff going down. I’m tired of being cowed by knuckleheads with guns, drugs, and what not.

If you’re white, or whoever, and just recently moved to this area, and see or suspect nonsense, call the cops. The bottom line is, this shooting, and everything around it, is unnecessary. This neighborhood is getting better. We all need to do our part to keep it going in the right direction.

That corner store needs to go. It’s what attracts a lot of the crime in the area

I live in Church Hill not too far from Oakwood Ave and have a friend that lives on Oakwood Ave. He has been taking to the police about these houses for some time(well over 2 years). Not sure why nothing had been done ? Putting together a task force to raid the houses ? Don’t know why it takrs so long being police expressed knowing about the drug houses ? Shame someone had to be shot to get things moving.

@Michael. That is the true origin of the frustration; when the police know the drug dealers, know the gang members, and which house is a problem. People always ask why don’t residents call the police. Let me tell you we do. The cops say yes we know, but if we don’t see it we can’t do anything.

So yes we all know what’s going on, including the police. The question is what tools do the police need to intervene? I have found that code violations and landlord/tenat risking section 8 eligibility works good.

Good tips Jonathan!
However when houses are owner-occupied, or addicted-owner occupied it creates a different set of options.

We have also seen excellent results from the police actually arresting the drug dealers involved for drug dealing, carrying illegal guns, drug possession and so on. It requires investigation. Which, from what I’m given to understand, RPD has been oddly unwilling to do in this case. Maybe one of the dealers is the godparent of the child of a powerful city official or something as unlikely as that…….

^ lol no, the city is just filled with houses like this. The east end, Northside, Southside, and even parts of the west end are like this.

There’s so many other people complaining about the same thing. The only difference is a lot of the people in church hill are new to living in an environment like this.

First of all, thank each of you for posting. This has been an ongoing problem. Many here have been going to the community meetings and voiceing and asking the police and Ms Newbel for help. Yes we have landlords who don’t care about their neighbors. Yes we have owners who knowingly deal from their homes. Yes we have powerful people in this community that support it. No No No, weather you are new to this area or a long time resident, this is not acceptable environment. We all, especially our children deserve to live in a healthy, safe, loving, nerturing environment.
