Bus vs motorcycle on 25th Street

25th Street is blocked off after a very serious looking accident between a GRTC bus and a small motorcycle at 25th and Clay.

Biker going west on clay ran stopsign at 25th and struck head on by bus heading south on 25. He appeared to have died instantly. Very gruesome and tragic. There have been dozens of accidents at this corner. Much needed stoplight, 4 way stop or roundabout

This is horrible, I am so sorry that someone died.

Not disputing that the bike ran the stop sign, and a bus likely would have been visible if they’d stopped–but that stop at 25th is a hard intersection for vehicles heading east on Clay. Cars/vans park all the way up to the corner on 25th and looking north for clearance in particular is hard–you can’t see if a car is coming and the traffic on 25th moves fast enough that the clearance you have doesn’t last very long. Have almost been t-boned there heading east on Clay a number times, and I’m a very cautious driver.

Parts of the Fan now have concrete infrastructure that prevents cars from parking close to corners, would love that to happen in Church Hill because parking all the way up to corners causes some of these accidents–you can’t see unless you get your car halfway out into traffic.

This is horribly sad. That’s a terrible intersection. I hope something constructive can come from this. Traffic light? Roundabout? Enforce parking regulations (*you could probably pay for additional policing if parking regulations were even somewhat enforced)?

I agree Mike J. The parking restrictions are not enforced at all in Church Hill, even when there are signs that indicate “no parking”; just drive by Sub Rosa and see all the cars in the no parking zone. Add to that parking within 25 feet of a cross walk or fire hydrant and there is a lot of money to be made by the city. Unfortunately, the city ignores these issues.

In my experience, RPD is very responsive to non-emergency reports of vehicles illegally parked, obstructing alleys, etc. In conversation with Lt. McCroy it’s become clear that this isn’t something they’re staffed or capable of enforcing on a non report basis. As the neighborhood densifies this will become a bigger issue. I can say with a house fronting the 600 block of 25th, I tire of hearing buses stuck behind improperly parked patrons of both my block neighbors, but have found RPD more than willing to help when notified.

I want to point out that I am not advocating parking to the extreme ends as the code allows; but I did not find a no parking limitation in relation to distance to/from an intersection on it’s own, only no parking within an intersection. The intersection distance was always in relation to another traffic device like crosswalk or stop sign.

What I found was:

A crosswalk is not consistently identified in the city code. It was stated as “marked crosswalk” and just “crosswalk.” So how one can decipher the code varies. If one believes that a crosswalk is only the designated/marked crosswalk (I’ll admit I do as you can not reasonably expect a driver to identify a non-marked crosswalk and impose a fine), then you can park up to but not blocking the handicap ramp. So, if no ramp, then you can park up to the intersection/end of the curb. Furthermore, you could then park at the end of the curb if no ramp, or stop sign, or other instrument that requires it’s own “no parking” verbiage.

And just to clarify distances:
No parking within 20 feet of the crosswalk at an intersection
No parking within 30 feet of a stop sign
No parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant

Some of the problem at the 25th and Clay intersection is the blocking of sight lines looking north on 25th by the tree that is at the corner. It is too low to see oncoming traffic southbound on 25th. This may have been part of the problem for the cycle rider.

Do we have an update on the moped rider’s condition?

FYI…the gentleman did not die. He had just left work heading home. I must say he is still in very serious condition. Please keep him in prayer as his only child, his daughter, tries to piece his life back together.
