Light Up Libby Hill!

Date: Saturday, December 21, 2019

Time: Assemble Luminaries – 3 PM — Candles Lit – 4:45 PM

Assembly location: Libby Hill Park House

Because of the huge success of the past two years event, let’s do it again! What better way to bring the community together than for an activity where we can volunteer together in a relaxed, fun environment and all ages can participate. So, let’s Light-up Libby Hill with luminaries!

A luminary is a white paper bag (lunch bag size) with a candle inside. The bags are spaced apart to outline walkways or other features. The attached pictures are from previous year’s events. The plan would be to outline Libby Hill Park and then move outward from there. How far we can go depends on the amount of participation. Last year people contributed enough money for the purchase of 1100 luminaries. There were several areas we could get to with more luminaries so let’s try for 1500!!!

We will all meet at the park house at 3 PM to begin assembling the luminaries. It will be an “assembly line” type process…

  • fill the bags with a few inches of sand
  • place the bags around the park
  • insert the candle
  • light

At 4:45 PM, we will light the candles. If possible, please bring a lighter as described below…

“We recommend you use grill lighters to light your luminaries. The long neck makes it easier to light the candle inside the bag; plus, there’s less likelihood of burning your fingers and you won’t have to bend down so much. Be sure to raise the wick on each candle prior to lighting.”

The candles should burn for approximately 6-7 hours.

Well that’s the plan. The luminaries need ordered in advance so we’re sending out this information now. The cost is the same as last year – ten luminaries cost $5.00. Please order in $5 increments ($5, $10, $15, etc.). We learned from the first year that money collection the evening of the event is challenging, so we moved to asking for your contribution in advance and the money collected will be used to buy the luminaries. Contributions can be made through cash/check, Venmo, PayPal, CashAp, etc. If leaving cash/check, then please put in an envelope and include your name, phone #, and email address and drop in our mail slot. Our address is 2601 E. Grace St. We will send you an email confirmation. All contributions need received by Saturday, November 30th.

We will keep everyone informed about the level of participation. Feel free to forward this information on to other individuals or organizations, other forums, community newsletters, etc. where you think it would help get the word out. We will gladly accept contributions from any individuals, organizations, or groups to help offset the cost of the sand and other miscellaneous expenses.

Last year there were suggestions of having food, music, etc. If anyone would like to organize any of these things or be a part of the planning committee, then please let us know. We hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween and Thanksgiving and let’s get ready to “Light-up Libby Hill”!

Bests,

Brian and Stacey Loos

Regarding Light-up Libby Hill… the Bikini Panini food truck is planning to be at the park from 4pm-8pm. We’ve never had something like that before so this is a HUGE development for the event!!! As an update we have received contributions for 420 luminaries so far, which gets us closer to the goal of 1500.

Happy Thursday! I just couldn’t wait for the weekend to provide an update. Over the past few days we’ve received contributions for more luminaries plus some candle lighters. We are now up to 620 of 1500. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Hi Everyone!!! Here is the next Light-up Libby Hill update. We’ve received contributions for another 120 luminaries, putting us at 740. We are now half way to our goal BUT we only have a week and a half left before the order has to be placed.

If you’ve been thinking about contributing and haven’t gotten around to it, then now would be a GREAT time!!! The more luminaries we get the more spectacular we can Light-up Libby Hill!!!

As a reminder, the Bikini Panini food truck will be there for the event.

Happy Sunday!!! We’re only one week away from needing all contributions in so we can order the luminaries. Received contributions over the past few days to buy another 180, so we are at 920. Our goal is 1500 and I know we can do it! Remember it only takes $5 dollars to buy 10 luminaries; that 50 cents each.

A big THANK YOU for all the nice notes and comments!!! We’re glad people have enjoyed the event and it is only successful because of YOU, the community, who contributes and participates.

Brian

Morning! Well the Thanksgiving holiday is fast approaching and because it falls so late this year the luminaries need to be ordered this coming Monday. The contributions continue to flow in; we just received enough for another 180, which puts us at 1100. This is what we raised last year. Can we hit our goal of 1500 to reach more parts of the park and beyond? Of course we can with everyone’s support!

We wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Good afternoon! Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. And you survived Black Friday as you wait for Cyber Monday. One thing there is not time to wait for though, is if you’d like to make a contribution for the luminaries. We have received contributions for 290 more, which puts us now at 1390 – WOW!!!! We are only 110 away or $55 from our goal of 1500.

A BIG shout out to Sharon Pederson for all her efforts to motivate the community!!! The luminary order needs placed on Monday, so please send any contributions in today or tomorrow.

It’s so exciting to see the community coming together for the event. Enjoy your weekend!

It’s official…the luminaries have been ordered! I am finding it hard to believe what I am about to say. The order was for 2000!!! We blew the goal out of the water and almost doubled the amount from last year. This is truly AMAZING!

As excited as I am to share this news with you, I am nervous now because we have to have enough people to help assemble and place them around the park. WE NEED YOU!!! And this is a great event for the entire family.

I will be creating a Sign-up Genius to see who will be there to help, who can bring tables for the assembly area, and who can bring pick-up trucks to help move the UNLIT luminaries to the different parts of the park. And then there is the set-up crew and the crew to pick up the luminaries Sunday morning.

I am so looking forward to seeing the community come together to turn the park into a picturesque, winter wonderland. Look for the next update soon and make sure your calendar is marked for Saturday the 21st when we Light-up Libby Hill!

Bests,

Brian
