Light Up Libby Hill!

Time: Assemble Luminaries – 3 PM — Candles Lit – 4:45 PM
Assembly location: Libby Hill Park House
Because of the huge success of the past two years event, let’s do it again! What better way to bring the community together than for an activity where we can volunteer together in a relaxed, fun environment and all ages can participate. So, let’s Light-up Libby Hill with luminaries!
A luminary is a white paper bag (lunch bag size) with a candle inside. The bags are spaced apart to outline walkways or other features. The attached pictures are from previous year’s events. The plan would be to outline Libby Hill Park and then move outward from there. How far we can go depends on the amount of participation. Last year people contributed enough money for the purchase of 1100 luminaries. There were several areas we could get to with more luminaries so let’s try for 1500!!!
We will all meet at the park house at 3 PM to begin assembling the luminaries. It will be an “assembly line” type process…
- fill the bags with a few inches of sand
- place the bags around the park
- insert the candle
At 4:45 PM, we will light the candles. If possible, please bring a lighter as described below…
“We recommend you use grill lighters to light your luminaries. The long neck makes it easier to light the candle inside the bag; plus, there’s less likelihood of burning your fingers and you won’t have to bend down so much. Be sure to raise the wick on each candle prior to lighting.”
The candles should burn for approximately 6-7 hours.
Well that’s the plan. The luminaries need ordered in advance so we’re sending out this information now. The cost is the same as last year – ten luminaries cost $5.00. Please order in $5 increments ($5, $10, $15, etc.). We learned from the first year that money collection the evening of the event is challenging, so we moved to asking for your contribution in advance and the money collected will be used to buy the luminaries. Contributions can be made through cash/check, Venmo, PayPal, CashAp, etc. If leaving cash/check, then please put in an envelope and include your name, phone #, and email address and drop in our mail slot. Our address is 2601 E. Grace St. We will send you an email confirmation. All contributions need received by Saturday, November 30th.
We will keep everyone informed about the level of participation. Feel free to forward this information on to other individuals or organizations, other forums, community newsletters, etc. where you think it would help get the word out. We will gladly accept contributions from any individuals, organizations, or groups to help offset the cost of the sand and other miscellaneous expenses.
Last year there were suggestions of having food, music, etc. If anyone would like to organize any of these things or be a part of the planning committee, then please let us know. We hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween and Thanksgiving and let’s get ready to “Light-up Libby Hill”!
