Good morning! If you don’t have power, please report your outage to Dominion.

The past few days sections of Shockoe Bottom and Church Hill have experienced power outages. The official documentation on the Dominion website says the outage cause is “pending investigation”.. For today you should expect to have your power back by 10 a.m or 3 P.M.

Crews are actively working!

If you have lost your power go to https://www.dominionenergy.com/outages/report-and-check-outages

Alternatively, you can call 1-866-366-4357.

Hopefully they actually fix the problem this time.

“I don’t know what the job involves or even have an inkling of how to do it, but I’m going to complain about what they’re doing anyhow”

Zach Morrison it has happened 2 mornings in a row and yesterday evening. Obviously, whatever they were doing, wasn’t working. Maybe they finally fixed it for good.

Donnie Dalton that doesn’t mean the problem is immediately apparent or easy to troubleshoot. Sometimes these things take time to figure out, sometimes you have to try one thing to see if it fixes the problem, and to eliminate it as the cause before moving on to another. Plus those guys are working with voltage and current that will kill you in the blink of an eye.

Hey Gustavo, can you do a little more digging on this one? I live in the area and it seems like a more complicated situation than the usual outage.

The situation started at 3:30 am yesterday when passers-by called the police (or fire dept) to report smoke emanating from under a manhole cover located at the intersection of 21st and Broad. Power went out almost exactly when the police arrived, i.e. after the smoke was seen and reported. For about two hours police and fire fighters were looking at it/working on it. They blocked off parts of both 21st and Broad, so it seemed serious. It started raining around 5; power resumed around 5:30 am. Later around 8-10 am Dominion Power workers were seen at that intersection looking at the manhole, but IDK if they had been informed about the outage in the area or were responding specifically to a complaint from the fire dept about that particular manhole/whatever’s under there.

Then this morning power went out around 5-5:30 and still hadn’t come on at 9. As a resident on that intersection, it would be useful to get more information on whether something blew up under the manhole, if it was due to the high temperatures or something else, what the fire department found & whether they communicated it to Dominion or if those were independent assessments. And what Dominion energy fixed yesterday versus what they found today. This morning, our power went out around 5 am but there was no smoke rising from the manhole, so it may have been a totally independent problem, but given traffic lights are out at that intersection (and a couple others further out) it’s certainly possible that they’re related.

I just wish they could have warned residents yesterday to expect an outage in 24 hours or something like that so it would not have been such a disruption two days in a row. And it would be good to know if we should expect more outages this week and/or traffic disruptions for repairs, etc.

Hey neighbors, this is an update from the Church Hill Neighborhood Group. “Just talked to a Dominion worker on N21st and he said there will be more power outages today because they have to put in a new cable. Work should be completed by tomorrow!”

@Gustavo thanks! I tried calling the fire dept yesterday and spoke to a guy who said “we all started on the 8 am shift, don’t know anything about what happened earlier” as if they have absolutely no record-keeping… And it’s impossible to talk to a human at Dominion Energy, you can either pay a bill (of course) or report/check on outages.

I’m at 26th and Broad, power out Tuesday afternoon including light at 25th and Broad, came back on around 4 p.m. Out again around 5 p.m. but came back on in five minutes. Out again sometime early this morning (5 am.m?), back around 9 a.m. As a former Dominion employee, everyone needs to please call them and report, otherwise they don’t necessarily know who is with out power. 1-866-DOM-HELP. I realize you don’t always get a human, but please call anyway!

Calling fire dept for power outages doesn’t help, call Dominion.
