PBS Partners with The Market at 25th

The Market @ 25th St celebrated its grand opening recently, and Richmond’s local PBS station, WCVE PBS, will have a permanent presence inside. The station’s PBS KIDS Ready To Learn outreach initiative will be a fixture at The Market at 25th, providing fun and educational engagement opportunities for area children and families. All Ready To Learn resources and activities are anchored by the trusted PBS KIDS brand.

Leading the effort at The Market at 25th is Karen Wells, newly hired East End Ready To Learn Manager, and a fifth generation Church Hill native whose previous role at the American Heart Association saw her developing local programs to address health disparities and food deserts in Church Hill. In this new, full-time position with WCVE PBS, Wells will connect with neighbors in the market space and build on already established  partnerships with key organizations in the community, including the Peter Paul Development Center, to bring resources and engagement learning experiences to children and families.

“Ready To Learn is thrilled to bring Karen’s talents and knowledge to our program in the East End,” says Mary Jo Grieve, Director of the Ready To Learn program at the Community Idea Stations. “With Karen as the connector to the Church Hill community, we will be able to help transform the everyday act of grocery shopping into a powerful learning landscape for families.”

Visitors to The Market at 25th will encounter PBS KIDS Ready To Learn resources throughout the store, everywhere from the PBS KIDS Welcome Wall near the front entrance to the Little Free Library inside the Nook Café to the PBS KIDS Central area located in the store’s Community Room.

The PBS KIDS Welcome Wall highlights information about the latest PBS KIDS events and programs and offers recipe cards and activity sheets featuring PBS KIDS characters.

The Little Free Library, sponsored by PBS KIDS Ready To Learn, offers a great place to find a new book and spend some time reading. In the spirit of the Little Free Library movement, guests are encouraged to take a book with them, return it when done, or even contribute a book or two of their own.

PBS KIDS Central in the Community Room is the main location for most of the East End programs and events hosted by PBS KIDS Ready To Learn. Regular story times, family engagement days, and free book distribution events are planned. PBS KIDS show screenings and appearances by beloved PBS KIDS characters such as Daniel Tiger are also planned for the near future. Information about upcoming programs and events will be posted to the Market’s online calendar.

“PBS KIDS has been providing fun, educational programs and tools for kids and families for decades. We are so proud to collaborate with The Market at 25th to bring our Ready To Learn initiative to our Church Hill neighbors and friends,” says Wells. “We look forward to establishing new connections in the East End community, and we’re eager to show shoppers and visitors all that PBS KIDS Ready To Learn has to offer.”
