Where: 5001 Government Rd, Richmond, VA
Down the hill from Church Hill and on the edge of Fulton is a new eatery called the Chicken Shack! I got to have a quick visit and order some food from Pam, the owner and proprietor of this new food spot.
Pam let me know that the space has been owned by her husband since the 70’s. At that time it was a Dairy King but the space had since been vacant for quite some time. They’re open now though! July 21st will mark 4 weeks that the chicken shack has been open.
They have hand cut and breaded potato wedges, sandwiches, fried chicken, french fries, ice cream, and much more.
Be sure and check out this new spot if you’re in the area and say hi to Pam!
P.S. Could you ever really go wrong with potatoes, chicken, and ice cream?!?

It was a Dairy Queen when I was a child.
It was a Dairy King opened in 1977 – and the original family that opened that has always owned the property and has reopened this new venture. So cool that they are back running business in the neighborhood again!!
My two year old LOVED it! ?
Alexander your dream!
Where exactly?
On Government Road, at the intersection of Government and Williamsburg. It’s on the right if you’re coming from Church Hill.
5001 Government Rd just on the edge of Fulton.
I’m curious about why they hung a sign that says “G & G Food Express” over some of their hand painted lettering? Once that went up, we thought maybe they’d changed direction and were going to be some sort of convenience store—hence our not having been yet!
I think thats the business name – but its the chicken shack for sure – very clean – well done – I dont eat meat but the potato wedges were incredible
I’m not really sure Kate. I’ll try and remember to ask the next time I stop by.
We will definitely be checking it out now! Glad to hear it’s good ?
Let’s go!
Is this place related to the franchise with the same name?
Hi Chris,
I’m not really sure. When you Google Chicken Shack it seems like there are multiple franchises/restaurants with that name that aren’t necessarily related.
What’s the address
right at government and national – close to williamsburg rd
Beth Allums thank you
Hi Samantha,
It’s 5001 Government Rd just on the edge of the Fulton neighborhood.
Oh! Sweet! I’m going to check that out!
Ok,so this article pops up on my google news feed but there’s no context. What town, what state? Used to be an article started off with the city name.. How even more appropriate now that we can see news from anywhere.
Hi Jade,
Sorry about that. I think one of my edits didn’t get published which did include the address. Church People’s News is a news source for the East End of Richmond, VA. All of our news is local to this area for the most part.
I wanna try it!
What is the address? Cannot find it.
Lol Deara Chambliss you beat me to it ?
Funmilayo Muyide I should’ve tagged you too, I forget you’re a foodie
Actual street address?
Love the food
We ate there today and loved it, had the fried chicken and smothered pork chops! so glad to have them!

Yes, yes you can. Metro-Richmond is home to more obese people than most other large communities in the nation, according to findings released by Gallup. The survey company found 28.8 percent of the more than one million people who live in metro-Richmond were obese.
Richmond ranked as the third “Most Obese Major U.S. Community.”

Thank you Johnathan for letting people know they’re fat. Im sure everyone appreciated you lovely post on this business and got a lot out of it.
Ha! Mike, your snark is adorable.
Jonathans point is well made however; people actually die from fried chicken smothered ribs and Ice cream. And the public health cost is enormous. Diabetes, heart disease, etc. Delicious, but decidedly not great for the community.
And yeah. If you see something say something. We are way too fat.
I’m going to the gym.
Burgers, Fries, Shakes and BBQ
The four basic food groups.
Everyone knows you could die from eating the wrong foods and too much will make you fat. . It’s all about moderation. I’m not one that would or do eat at fatty restaurants often but I sure do enjoy them as a treat every now and again. This restaurant may be one of those great spots and I will be checking it out !
I love to try out new food spots, thank you all and I live in Churchill.
