House Vandalism: Beware

From a concerned neighbor:

Beware kids throwing rocks at houses. Yesterday around 6:30 pm, we heard something hit the front of our house on the 3300 block of E. Broad. My husband walked out the front door and was met by a woman who was walking her dog. She told my husband that she witnessed two kids (in a group of kids) picking up rocks and throwing them at our door. She then pointed to the group of kids who were walking west on E. Broad. About two months ago, we came home to find a hole and cracks in our front door window. At first we thought they were bullet holes, but we then found rocks on the porch near the door. The rocks likely came from our neighbor’s front yard. We reported the incident to the police. If anyone witnesses something like this, please report it to the police.

We caught a group of kids breaking windows last night on R and 26th. Police were called. It was 4 teen boys, 1 girl.

I should add that the kids scattered before the police got there
Officers were very prompt.

It’s probably the same kids who came and threw bricks at me, my brother in law, and our neighbor a few weeks ago at 27th and Cedar, who are also very likely the same kids that have been harassing people and breaking stuff around here for the past year or so. They’re no strangers to the police, who know damn well their behavior is only escalating. I hope something straightens these kids out before they move on to more violent behavior.

If they’re no strangers to the police, why are these vandals arrested? So confusing. Jason, that is horrible!!

The community needs to start calling the Mayors Office and the Police Chief about the crime going on in the Church Hill area. I called the other day but I am only one voice. We need to bring attention to what’s happening in our neighborhood so that leadership will step up and help us continue to grow this community. Look at all the flipped houses, new shops and restaurants, this area is becoming a wonderful space for families and friends to live together. Let’s speak up to our city leaders to ensure Church Hill continues to thrive and be a safe space to live.

This is a very sad situation. Me, my wife, and my mother (before she moved) have had similar experiences, (bricks being removed from our backyard, fences being torn down etc.), and nothing was done about it. I think we, as citizens of Churchill should be aware, and report any suspicious activity. TECHNICALLY, BY LAW, any group of kids who are in a group committing crimes are considered a gang. Based on the description, and in a sociological/ behavioral sense, it sounds like these kids were either carrying out orders from a high ranking gangmember, to vandalize and intimidate people of the gentrification process, or forming a gang of their own. What is next? Firearms!? Kids shooting at houses? This needs to be stopped!
