Update: Farm Fresh to remain open- for now
NBC12 reporter, Alex Whittler, says on her Twitter feed:
#UPDATE I just got confirmation from the parent company of the #ShockoeBottom Farm Fresh— the store WILL NOT close this upcoming Monday. The date to find a buyer has been extended. The company says they’ll keep us posted…

The assumption here is that Farm Fresh says that they are NOT closing this coming Monday but have extended the employees’ positions until further notice when they have a definite buyer in place. The direct quote from the VP of communications:
Jeff Swanson, VP of Corporate Communications says the notice has been extended. “At the time we announced plans to exit our Farm Fresh banner, we provided all Farm Fresh employees with notification letters and a minimum 60-day notice as required by law, with an ability to extend the notice beyond the 60 days if necessary. In the case of the Richmond Farm Fresh store, we have extended the store team’s employment as we continue to explore a buyer for this location. To be clear, we have no plans to close the store on Monday, May 14.”
This is still a mixed bag of confusion and the rumor mill continues in social media. Here are some of them:
- The former CEO of Farm Fresh bought it.
- There was speculation since “Cub.com” appeared on a register receipt.
- One of the assistant managers confirmed the new ownership will continue with SuperValu products. “You won’t notice any difference.”

Power outage car hit a telephone pole. Power is out in the 400 and 500 block of Marshall and Clay st police on scene
I have asked 3 or 4 employees and all said it had been purchased by a private group of (unnamed) investors. I figured until the financing was in place they just weren’t saying anything but if I were an employee I wouldn’t leave it to chance…the lack of transparency smells a little fishy to me.
SuperValu owns stores called Cub Foods
I used to know Jeff Swanson when he worked at Total Wine. He is not to be trusted.
What the hey?
I see that SuperValu is opening in Minneapolis, what they call an “urban format” Cub store. The artist concept seems along the lines of what is happening on Nine Mile Road. Apartments or Condos with the grocery store on the first floor.
There was the one day tease of register receipts printing the Cub name on them. The registers would have to be programmed to do that and this makes me wonder if that is the most substantial possibility?
I would like to know if the Farm Fresh on Big Bethel Road has been sold.
Farm Fresh isn’t closing their Toano (outside of Wburg) yet which I’m happ for the employees and myself. Sounds like the same type of situation as your Richmond store, depends on which employee you ask which I did I got different answers on the final final version of the higher up decision makers. I understand things can change but the HR folks and other VPs seem to lack communication to the folks on the front line with their customers. Of course there is two sides to every story but just look at their eyes and the expression on there face.
Thanyou for listening!
Sorry for any typos!
What is the plan for farm fresh victory crossing in portsmouth va.we need a grocery there asap
@7 Patricia E. Not sure how the store in Hampton has anything to do with the one in Richmond but yes, the Hampton store was sold to Kroger per an April 17th article in the Daily-Press. 😉
@9 Valarie Peterson… still don’t understand how grocery stores in the Tidewater area relate to our local concern here in Richmond on a Church Hill neighborhood forum? But, I see that your store in Portsmouth is in the same boat as our store. Was one of 17 not picked up by Harris Teeter, Kroger, or Food Lion. In fact, I saw that the shopping center it is in, was up for sale this time last year for $17.25-million. You may want to check your own community forums and news outlets to see what they say about the future of the Victory Crossing store.

Just read that a Charlottesville group is buying this place and keeping the Farm Fresh name, and they are hoping to keep as many employees as possible.
Well, looks like the verdict is in and now made public.

According to Channel 6 News site:
“Charlottesville-based Neighborhood Grocery Holdings LLC (NGH) announced plans to buy the Richmond Farm Fresh supermarket on East Main Street in Shockoe Bottom.”
NGH operates both Crozet Market and Market Street Market — in and around Charlottesville.
It’s going to be an independent out of Charlottesville.
