RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Richmonders came together Saturday for the first-ever “I Have a Dream” festival.

The three-hour-long event, held at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School started with a parade and continued with live music, art displays and food.

Richmond Sheriff Antoinette Irving said the event was all about connecting with kids in the community.

“We want our kids to understand public safety and also to understand how much we care about them,” Irving said. “(And) make sure that they understand that there are resources out there for them and we want to make sure that they understand what their possibilities are.”

The inaugural event celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while aiming to promote respect and safety within the community. The festival also intended to inspire Richmonders to declare and pursue their own dreams and help others to do the same.

Mayor Levar Stoney was in attendance and served as the parade’s Grand Marshal. Richmond’s No BS Brass Band also performed.

Organizers said the festival was a success and hope to return next year.
