Macabre Brooklyn duo Charming Disaster plays Richmond’s Poe Museum

Thu Sep 28 6:00 pm
Brooklyn-based folk-noir duo Charming Disaster will bring their darkly comic duets about love, death, crime, ancient mythology, and the supernatural to Richmond’s Poe Museum in support of their new album, Cautionary Tales.

They will perform at The Poe Museum on Thursday, September 28 at 6pm, part of the museum’s monthly “Unhappy Hour” live music series. Admission is $8.

Charming Disaster’s storytelling songs explore different sorts of trouble two people can get into with a ukulele and a guitar, playing out against a backdrop of nightclubs, car chases, circus tents, the occult, the afterlife, and beyond. A musical duo based in Brooklyn, NY, formed in 2012 by Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris, Charming Disaster’s inspirations include the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the noir fiction of Raymond Chandler, the murder ballads of the Americana tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret. They achieved cult status when their paranormal love song “Ghost Story” was featured on the creepy hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale. Since then their theatrical, entertaining live performances have engaged audiences across the United States. Music blog The Ruckus described their debut album, Love, Crime & Other Trouble, as “the perfect balance of fun and frightening storytelling.” They are touring behind their new album, Cautionary Tales.

“Charming Disaster sound like the music that Pugsley and Wednesday Addams might have made after listening to the Decemberists, Squeeze and some Chopin.”
-Yes! Weekly

“Gothic folk murder balladry, not unlike PJ Harvey at her most ornate. But there’s an accessibility and pop sensibility that also nods to the likes of Andrew Bird or Regina Spektor.” -Treble
