Jr Iron Chef Competition – A Community Event

Sat Aug 26 11:00 am
The NRC, Peter Paul Dev Center, Fit4kids, and Shalom are partnering to offer youth in the east end the opportunity to participate in a Jr Iron Chef Competition at Peter Paul Dev Center in Church hill. The competition will be free for the public.

During the competition, we will have local non-profits, community based orgs and farms set up info/demo tables and farmstands highlighting gardening, food, health, nutrition, and access. The NRC will be giving away seeds and seedlings and a select number of Good and Cheap (a SNAP cookbook) to SNAP participants. The purpose of this community event is to highlight and work toward tackling the issue of food insecurity in the est end and to connect community members to resources right in here in their neighborhood in hopes that they can work toward eating healthier and finding access to fresh, whole foods. This program is sponsored by Whole Foods Market, Hamilton Beach, a number of Church Hill restaurants and community members and is in partnership with a number of Church Hill based organizations and other community partners. For a full list of Sponsors and Partners please contact brandon@nrccafe.org

Become an Adult Literacy Tutor

Tue Aug 29 10:00 am
How different would your life be if you could not read well?

1 in 6 adults in the city of Richmond go through life with low-literacy. That’s enough to fill the VCU Siegel Center 4.5 times. By 2018, 63% of jobs will require education above a high school diploma. The READ Center’s mission is to help adults with low-level literacy develop reading and communication skills so they can fulfill their roles as citizens, workers, and family members, and improve their quality of life.

You have the power to make a difference in the life of someone in your community by becoming an adult literacy tutor. The READ Center provides classes and one-to-one tutoring, and we have an ongoing need for volunteers willing to tutor our students in reading, writing, basic math, and digital skills. As a volunteer tutor, you’ll receive ongoing support and training opportunities. You’ll join a welcoming community of volunteers and teachers willing to share their knowledge and passion for making a difference.

Sound compelling? Join us at Volunteer Orientation! Visit our website for more information and to submit a volunteer application.
