Work on post office space includes asbestos abatement, roof repair

From Jennifer D. Mullen of Roth Jackson via Cynthia Newbille:

Josh Bilder has been working with the Post Office over the last few months to coordinate the work within the Post Office Building. Work began on Monday, July 24 with asbestos abatement within the building. This work is expected to be completed Friday, August 4.

The roof work began July 24 with the replacement of the coupling cap. The roof patching and replacement will begin next. In connection with the roof work some of the off-site trees may be trimmed through coordination with the property owners.

On the interior, the Post Office has removed all of its property and the entire interior space will be repainted, new flooring installed and the employee restrooms will be renovated. The mason will begin work on the interior August 9.

Upon completion of the interior items, the Post Office will move their property back into the space. All construction related items are expected to be completed by August 25 to allow the Post Office time to move back as soon as possible.

Josh is committed to getting the Post Office in full operation on 25th Street, is working closely with Post Office officials and will provide another update on August 11.

The post office on 25th Street closed suddenly in early April of this year.

That post office has got to be the absolutely worst post office I ever had to deal with. One should not have to go to a wealthier zip code to get better reliable service. It’s disgusting.

I am not happy with what I am seeing here. It seems like all they are doing is slapping on a band aid. Until they completely remodel the building, it will still have all of the charm of a prison processing room, complete with workers with the same enthusiasm for their job.

OK… no updates. No noticeable work. What is or isn’t being done? Or if they really want this dump reopened, when will it happen?

For what it is worth, I see none, nada, zilch, zero building permits registered for 414 N 25th Street as of today, nearly 7 months after closure. That means nothing is going on with this building. And, still no OSHA complaints. (I also tried 416 N 25th just in case and still nothing).

The government has the right to break a lease but as I recall, they use a third party to lease outside owned property which is who dealt with Bilder. This lease runs from 4/1/2014 to 3/31/2019.

Donald McEachin was supposed to be the “go to” contact about this building and its status. We have not seen an update from him in months. What is up with that?
