Can you help make Oakwood Arts + P35 come to life?

Shannon Castleman has founded an arts center and gallery in a former church and day care in Oakwood, and is working to drum up some $$$ and support:

Help us launch Oakwood Arts + P35!

We are a fledgling arts center (Oakwood Arts) and gallery (P35) in the Oakwood neighborhood of Richmond’s East End. By bringing together members of the community to engage with art in all its forms, we seek to make art, as well as careers in creative industries, accessible to all. We also aim to serve as a secular space in a rapidly changing neighborhood for economically and culturally diverse neighbors to gather, interact, and learn from one another.

We have recently secured the lease (with intent to purchase) on a beautiful former church (circa 1906) and adjacent daycare center (circa 1927) on the corner of 35th and P Streets. Both buildings have suffered from neglect and are in need of a little — OK, a lot of — TLC. To get the doors open, we first have to bring the buildings up to code, which is going to take cash donations and some serious sweat equity.

Your donation, large or small, will go toward buying paint, fixing the windows, and helping us pay for inspectors, plumbers, and electricians. It will also go toward buying the furniture and equipment we need to get the ball rolling.

While work is under way, we plan to offer our inaugural program this summer at the Robinson Theater or in the green space outside Oakwood Arts + P35.
