New sky walker machine at Jefferson Park

Relatively soon after the new fitness equipment was installed at Jefferson Park last spring, the sky walker machine broke and was removed. Thanks to the diligent oversight of the Friends of Jefferson Park, the machine was recently replaced and is as good as new.

First, glad this has been replaced. Functional/new things are nice But, at the risk of seeming like a total smartass: I’m legitimately curious about the purpose of both this machine and the outdoor elliptical at the park. Are they significantly different from, say, walking? Do they prevent joint injury/wear?

Hoping someone can explain without getting mad at me for asking – again, I’m glad we have nice/new/working exercise equipment!

Hi Lee,

I live in Richmond amd sell outdoor play and exercise equipment for a company called Kompan. While this is not ours, we have a similar piece with very much the same type of functionality and movement. This particular piece is great for it’s low impact on joints. It also gives a wider range of movement in the hip joints that are not experienced with typical walking movement. For someone that may experience pain in walking mid to long distances, this piece of equipment is great. It can also add value to a walk outside and extend your cardio benefit. Much easier to get your heart rate up in a short amount of time than a brisk walk.

Hi Lee,

I spend many evenings sitting on the benches that overlook this equipment. I’ve noticed that family groups use them the most, with parents who are pushing a stroller or walking with an older friend and young kids with lots of energy to burn off. Not really groups that can do a brisk walk around the park, so running “in place” makes a lot of sense.

We are excited to have this equipment in the park. The elliptical and the sky walker do provide similar low impact work outs, but provide some variety. They are great if two people are working out together- no waiting.

I am very proud of this joint project of the parks, schools, the Friends of Jefferson Park and our local community hospital- Bon Secours!

It’s a great way to extend a trip to the park, and burn some calories with the family.
