From Christy:
I just wanted to inform the neighborhood to be on alert. Two weekends ago my car was broken into right in front of my home on 28th Street (near M Street) [yesterday] morning my sister/roommate, walked outside to find her car stolen. No signs of break in or broken glass. Just gone. I want to let everyone know to be extra vigilant.
The dark green markers on the East End Crime Map indicate stolen cars, theft from vehicles, tampering with vehicles, and theft of motor vehicle parts/accessories.

Is it sad that some part of me actually prefers people trying (hopefully locked) door handle to people approaching you on the street after dark with the tag line of “I’m not a bum, but give me 5$”?
I saw 4-5 teenagers trying car doors on Marshall between 32nd and 33rd a couple weeks back around midnight. They ran off when I hit the alarm button on my keys. I called RPD non-emergency, and they rolled a cruiser by a little while later.
Wife and I were walking the dogs up towards Chimbo park the other night and two guys were definitely being watched by the police. We saw no less than 6 officers watching them head back north.
Keep calling in the break-ins and we’ll keep getting more patrols!
@WarGibFA
At least they only ask you for five dollars. The folks that wander aimlessly where I live routinely ask for clothes, money, and rides! But the way you feel makes perfect sense – if they just try door handles, you don’t actually have to interact with them. (Sounds/looks terrible when I write it out, but it’s a bit intimidating at night)
On a slightly unrelated note – best/worst panhandling stories:
– A few days after Christmas last year, a man tried to get into the lobby of my apartment as I was locking the door behind me. He started yelling through the side light/transom that he “just needed somewhere to sleep”. When I yelled back, explaining that I couldn’t help him if I wanted to because “there isn’t enough room in the lobby for a person to lay down without getting stepped on,” (Which is true) he began stripping to his underwear while shouting “Look, man! See! I don’t have a gun!”
– A few weeks ago, while my handy man was helping me with yardwork, he gave a quarter to a gentleman that frequently begs on the street where I work. When I told my handyman that it was probably a mistake to acknowledge this particular beggar at all, he said “well, it was just a quarter”. About an hour later, the same guy came back, still begging for money. But when he saw my handyman still working on the yard, he came up and asked: “Excuse me, sir, can I have a cheeseburger?”
Yeah, WarGibFA, Sometimes, I also I think I’d much rather have them just try door handles and leave.

We had someone get into one of our vehicles around 1:30 am Saturday morning on North 23rd . We hadn’t even been inside more than 30 mins and when I came outside to walk our dog I noticed the car light on and everything thrown around, Called the police and they came by and checked things out. Ill be putting cameras out this week.
A grey 2005 Acura TL was stolen from 28th & M 2 days ago. Virginia Plates: VAV-5103. VCU Nursing sticker in the back window

I live on 22nd and Leigh and my car also had been broken into. Nothing that was stolen just everything thrown around and all the inside lights were on.
This happened Sunday October 30th
Manual transmissions greatly reduce the chance that the car will be stolen…yet another advantage.
Cool…^^^

I never buy or drive an expensive car. I buy older cars that have good engines and reliability, but look like they have been in a series of demolition derby’s. This is a truly effective way of criminals not wanting to target my cars.
The best way to get around downtown is on a bike or scooter. When you get to your location, try to put the bike inside or lock it up to a utility pole. And take the tires with you in a carry bag so criminals can drive away on your scooter
I wonder if we can petition for night patrol or a neighborhood watch. I would volunteer for something like that.
@Lee: Ah, you’ve met Mr. Quarter-Cheeseburger! He’s always over by the Chimbo mart. He will also ask you for a pork chop and a beer.
32nd and Clay checking in here — my car was broken into last night, various items taken. annoying more than anything (they didn’t really get anything of value) but there seems to be a lot of this going on recently.
