- The former Family Supermarket at 24th and Jefferson was condemned in April of 2013.
- As of August 2013, it was uncertain whether the building would be demolished or repaired.
- Building permits were issued in February of 2014, the building was stabilized, and it has sat vacant since.
- The property is owned by John B. Mann, Carolyn M. Myers, and Josephine R Katz Residuary TR. This is 1 of 9 properties owned by John B. Mann, Carolyn M. Myers, and Josephine R Katz Residuary TR – but is the only one in the East End and the only one that is vacant and boarded.
- Mr.Mann is a Richmond lawyer with Canfield, Baer & Heller, LLP, and is married to Barbara J. Gaden, Presiding Judge of the Civil General District Court.

Wonder what happened to Cheech.
I emailed Mr. Mann this morning. I hope other neighbors + business owners do the same.
What is his email address?
Can I get his email address?
I clicked the link in the article and submitted the contact form on his website. His paralegal already emailed me back and said he would get back to me about the status of the building ASAP. We shall see!

Thanks for keeping us updated on this building John. I know we’d all love to see something great happen with it.

As someone who lives on 24th St. I would love to see this turn into a restaurant or bar/pub. We don’t need another ‘market’ with Union Market right there and (hopefully) Jim’s coming a few blocks away.
Jim’s?

This place is an eyesore. Especially with all the development going on in this section. I hope Mr. Mann will just sell it to someone that can demolish it.
Email addresses for Mann and Gaden:
pburton@canfieldbaer.com (his assistant)

hoping to see some non-food related business set up shop … might make a killer local thrift, or Chop Suey 2 :))
Such a shame. We’ve been hoping to see something outstanding go in there. As it stands, it’s an absolute disgrace to the entire area.

A couple of your neighbors have been working quietly behind the scenes for years now on getting the owners to “do the right thing”.
The biggest stride (so far,) was made a couple years ago. That resulted in the building being officially condemned and closure of “the stinky store” as dubbed by residents of Church Hill House.
That minor success came with great effort and passion by folks who met personally with the owner and plead our case as a community.
This is not the first time that CHPN has tried to nudge this building in the right direction.
Public shaming doesn’t seem to work for these educated, affluent, comfortably-ensconced-in-their-golf-course-ghetto suburbanites.

Owning boarded up houses or spaces is such a waste of money. If these individuals would sell them at a reasonable price and get outta the way of folks that want to improve the hood we’d all be better off.

Level it, and start over.

I think it’s pretty hard for us to ask an individual to keep up their property when the city does not even take care of what they are supposed to.
Look at that sidewalk- that’s the cities responsibility. Why would someone dump more money into it when the city is taking care of their portion appropriately? Do you know what the backlog is for the city to get sidewalks fixed? Last time I checked it was 10-15 years based on annual budgets and the amount of work that was needed to be done.
Look at the grass issue around the city- most parks and city controlled areas will be cut 2 times this warm season?! They are even suggesting that citizens help cut the grass… What a joke.
@ Ryan and Robbie – There are houses on Broad Street still that look worse than this. No doubt it looks bad, but the reality is lots of church hill looked like this 15 years ago. Church Hill is still a works in process.
@ Bryan – I would not say that owning boarding up houses is a waste of money until you know what the owner paid for them and how much taxes they are paying. Looking at the real estate trends for church hill: owning any real estate that was bought for little, would not be a waste of money considering what things are being sold/rented out for.
#18 Daniel: actually that sidewalk looks that way because the building is sinking. It’s a direct result of that building being totally neglected to the point where it’s not structurally stable anymore. I like to point out City’s negligence as much as the next guy, but in this case they’re off the hook. It’s the owner.
#19 is spot on about the sidewalk, which is noticeably worse by the week….a slo mo gauge of the process of the building’s demise.
It seems to me that the city’s property, the sidewalk, has been destroyed by the sinking building. Who’s gonna pay to repair the taxpayers sidewalk? Shouldn’t this be addressed immediately???
15 urbngrill. shaming might be more effective at the absentee owners location. maybe try direct mail to the owner’s neighbors in that ensconced community. Christmas and garden club week seem appropriate. from the condition of the “stinky store” it is obvious the owner’s have no concern with its union hill neighbors
can anybody post these peoples actual email address?
Guessing it may be a profitable tax write-off for the owners.
