A conversation with Mary Thompson

The next of Paul Granger’s Front Porchin’ series features community organizer Mary Thompson:

Mary Thompson would tell you point blank that you need to get involved in your community, ideally through a civic association. She has lived in her home in Church Hill for 64 years, but her investment in her community goes beyond just residency. For nearly 25 years, Mrs. Thompson has been leading and inspiring neighbors to invest in their community, and over the last quarter century she has been on the front lines of bringing inspiring, positive transformation for her and her neighbors.

Mary is a pillar of this community. I doubt any of us would be here now if it wasn’t for the work she and her neighbors did for us back in the 80’s. She is a lovely person and I encourage everyone to get to know her.

Get her to tell you the story about how she helped keep a super highway connection to Interstate 64 from blowing up Carrington and O Streets, just east of the MLK bridge.

She’s the real deal.
