Don’t fall for the “teacher has cancer” scam

From a contact at Franklin Military:

Someone is riding some kids around in a white van going door-to-door asking for money for a teacher at Franklin who supposedly has cancer. Which is not true. Can you put out an alert please?

I wonder if this is the same group of kids engaging people at Kroger a few weeks ago. They were carrying around clipboards and asking for cash for an after school program. Kroger management and RPD ran them off after a while.

A young girl came by our house seems like more than two weeks ago. Was nice to her and chatted but never have or give cash at the door. So I asked her to stop by another time with more info. She hasn’t. Sad for them.

Hi everyone, I have talked to RPD and RPS about this. I too met these kids. It appears from RPS that there really was a sick teacher and these kids took it upon themselves to raise money for the teacher. This was not endorsed or known by RPS. The students have been spoken to.

In addition RPD is not investigating because they never got a call or complaint from anyone. However, they are aware of the matter and they ask that I share that anyone who is approached with this possible scam to contact the non-emergency number to file a police report (804) 646-5100

Sadly, people will stop at nothing these days.

It’s wrong on many levels to create this lie but quite another level to involve children. What kind of future generation are we developing?

This is sad to see happening, but I’m going to walk WAY out on a limb here: this is not the first time in history an adult has used kids to run a scam.

On another note, maybe they accept bitcoin…

Based on the comments by the poster at #10, could we change the title of this post since it seems like it is not a scam and these kids were actually trying to do something nice?
