Chase following carjacking, bank robbery ends on 25th Street

UPDATE 3:16 PM

From WTVR:

A gunman shot a hostage in the head and was then shot by Richmond Police officers following an afternoon police pursuit that raced in and out of several city neighborhoods. Both the hostage and gunman were rushed to the hospital where they were treated for life-threatening injuries.

The situation unfolded at about 12:30 p.m. Monday when the gunman approached two people at the B&P gas station located along the 2600 block of East Main Street in Richmond and asked them for money.

When the victims replied they had no money to give, the gunman forced the victims back into their vehicle at gunpoint and ordered them to take him to a bank, Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham said.

UPDATE 2:06 PM

Still nothing official on what happened, but the narrative on the street is that a car chase ended at 25th and R Street, with 2 men being shot by the police. Word has it that at least one of the men in the car either refused to get out of the car and/or was going for a weapon. None of this has been confirmed, just sharing what is being said.

There was at least one ambulance at the scene.

I’ve been to a fair number of shooting scenes over the years, but I’ve never been to one like this. 25th is taped off north from Q Street to at least R Street and there are what seem like every police officer in the 1st Precinct. There are officers in fatigues, and a helicopter and airplane in the sky.

This may be in relation to a bank robbery that took place in the 1100 block of Main. Police have been actively chasing the robbers and 25th was mentioned by pursuing officers. I’m hearing chatter the chase just ended at 26th and R.

Police cars have R St blocked in between 27th and 25th. An ambulance with lights and siren on just turned onto 28th in the direction of the hospital.

From the RPD:

Suspect Apprehended in Abduction

Richmond Police detectives are asking for the public’s help as they investigate an abduction and attempted robbery that occurred this afternoon.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., two men were abducted by an armed suspect at a gas station in the 2600 block of E. Main Street. The suspect held the pair at gunpoint, demanding money, then forced them to drive to the Bank of America at 1111 E. Main Street.

One victim went into the bank to obtain money. No funds were withdrawn, and the authorities were notified of the situation. The first victim remained inside the bank.

Officers responded to the bank and found the suspect vehicle driving away with the second victim still inside. A pursuit was initiated at approximately 12:52 p.m. Police followed the SUV through multiple city neighborhoods, into Henrico County and back into the Church Hill area.

Henrico Police deployed spike strips near the intersection of Magnolia Street and Mechanicsville Turnpike in Henrico County, puncturing the SUV’s tires. The vehicle came to a stop after it failed to make a turn from 25th Street onto R Street and collided with a parked car. The pursuit lasted about 30 minutes and never exceeded a speed of 35 mph.

Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and officers. Both the victim and suspect were taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. An RPD officer also suffered a minor injury.

Charges are expected in this case. The identity of the suspect will be released at that time. Richmond Police will not be conducting further media interviews at this time.

Anyone with information that may be helpful to the investigation is asked to call Major Crimes Detective William Thompson at 804-646-3925 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens may also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
