Play 60 Playground announced for Woodville

Officials from the Bon Secours Health System, the City of Richmond, and the Washington Football Charitable Foundation today announced plans for a Play 60 Playground to be built on city-owned property at 2535 Fairfield Avenue (by the Woodville Pool). Bon Secours and the Washington Football Charitable are funding the $150,000 project.

This will be the 2nd Play 60 Playground in the country, and the 1st in Richmond. The playground “is specifically built for rigorous activity, and brings together elements of the NFL combine and the television show American Ninja Warrior.” Activities will include a 40-yard dash with a timing device, ninja steps, sway steps, traverse walls, and agility trainers.

We want to build civic pride in the middle schools and produce quality athletes who go on to college, correct? Young men who could soon give back to their own communities?

Well, I think it is beyond time for the inner-city middle schools to have their own football program (just like majority of the state’s middle schools).

With all due respect to the community leagues, having coaches and parents involved within the schools helps hold African-American males more accountable for grades and behavior and allows the community (and the students) to be more visible in the lives of these children.

I’ve spoken with the previous interim superintendent and I’ve sent a letter to Dr. Bedden, and I can only hope that someone will take this serious and look at the list of potential pros (despite costs).

I am a teacher and it makes such a difference when I can communicate with coaches at school and hold expectations for students, again, at schools, than at the community based recreation centers.

Just a thought. Again, I am glad that this is being built!
