Any news on what they are doing on 18th, 19th/ Franklin St area? They have been removing all the asphalt. Are they planning to leave it cobblestone and brick exposed? I looked at the City webiste and can’t find any info.
They paved 18th Street today, but the picture above is on Franklin and they seem to be doing cobblestone repair, maybe they will leave that one exposed!!!
I haven’t looked down those street but suspect they are trying to dress up the streets for the bike racers and tourists who will be eating in that area.
I wish they would do the same for the Canal Street section between 12th and 14th which is a nightmare of patchwork and now being made more so with sewage pipe replacement. I hope they at least replace the blocks that were preserved in the intersection by the steak house that they now have asphalt in.
@jh… get up earlier or take a different route. I know, even the alternate route can be congested with people going around it all throwing you just as behind. Been there, done that.
Disgrace?! Getting a lot of strerts paved in anticipation of a windfall of tourists, business and tax receipts…I do not think that word means what you think it means.
Ummm…”disgrace” as in: The WORLD is descending upon Richmond in LESS than 100 days and the streets look the same, if not worse, than they did back in Feb of 2014, when this event was announced. But, I love your optimism, mate! Go Richmond City planning! Carry on!! ????????
What’s the disgrace? Back in the early 80’s, before the “renovation” of the Main Street Station, Franklin Street ran under the train shed, like it will do again. It took a lot of traffic off of Main St. and helped Church Hill. Seeing the cobblestones come back is great for traffic calming and aesthetics. Sorry, but your comment is uncalled for.
I hate concrete streets… look at Fairfield Way, Oliver Hill Way, and Venable.. all speed bumps that don’t get fixed. I say uncover all cobblestones in the Bottom.. and any concrete street, dig that up and replace it with cobblestone and paving block. Heck… anywhere historic should have the asphalt taken up…
Concrete streets are a lot better than the crappy blacktop they use in Richmond that washes up the first rain that comes. That is if it is maintained properly. I just don’t get it. I have family that lives in Iowa where the weather is much worse than here, especially winters, yet their roads, especially Interstates, are pristine like they were just paved. Granted what they use must be different because the asphalt is pinkish in color but at least it requires less maintenance so less cost in the long run. Why doesn’t VDOT and P&R learn from other states?
I too would love to see many of the streets returned to stone blocks. Broad Street use to be block before it was covered over. Marshall was too before they tore up the trolley tracks.
