An update on the Armstrong Cycling Team as they kick off the new season:
Race #1: Charlottesville
The Armstrong High School cycling team has been training hard since early February, and last Saturday, they finally had a chance to stretch their legs in competition! Everyone’s attitude was positive and the excitement was palpable as we pulled out of Fairfield Court with a van full of youth and a trailer full of bikes. All but two on this year’s team are veterans from last year’s racing, and their quiet determination (headphones in of course) during the drive to the race was comparable to any pro cycling squad before an event.
At the end of the day, Armstrong would walk away holding 3rd place overall in the team standings, but with room for improvement in individual results. For us, where we come up short is always an opportunity to learn and grow, and for Armstrong, we learned last week that this means first lap pacing- a lot of our riders were spooked by the blistering first lap on the Miller School’s course. But no matter, we have been diligently sharpening our start game in preparation for NEXT WEEK’S HOMETOWN RACE IN RICHMOND!
The Armstrong Cycling Team will be showing off their home course advantage on Tuesday, April 21st at Forest Hill Park in Richmond! Come cheer on the team and see what high school mountain bike racing in Virginia is all about! Races start at 5pm.
All we ask is please wait to talk to our riders until after the race (we need their full attention and concentration beforehand). Feel free to make signs, bring cowbells, or just yell loud!
If you would like more specific directions on how to find us on race day, please contact Matt Crane at: Matt@richmondcyclingcorps.org or his cell: 706.540.2340
Big News!
Martin Luther King Middle School Cycling is LIVE! Thanks to our exciting new partnership with Ukrop’s Dress Express, we have a whole slew of young riders eager to learn the sport and ready to follow in the footsteps of their Armstrong High School peers. Our new coach Matt Kuhn has been instrumental in launching this new program- he has been putting the pieces together around the clock to make sure this young squad is taken care of. Best news yet? Some of the new riders are moving so quickly that we will be starting them at the Richmond race on April 21st! So don’t forget to make some noise for the guys and girls in blue if you make it out there!

I will try to get over there but I have a commitment that ends just at 5. Really hope folks who can go over and support these kids. Really wonderful stuff!
