Makes me want to leave an Amazon package full of something foul on my front porch, just so this jackass can have the pleasure of accidentally opening it.

So sad. I hope it was a home pregnancy test or something not useful for him.

Was this buy Libbie Hill? I came back from a walk an hour ago and believe I saw this guy by the benches on Franklin. Looks like the same jacket.

Laska Keller, I hope you reported the possible sighting to police non-emergency numbers.

I’m lucky i’m home all day so i don’t have this problem. Maybe getting a P.O. box is the solution. As a side note: what type of cameras are those, that is great quality and I have been looking to install some.

Had a package stolen from our porch last Friday (Chimborazo Blvd). They took the shirt and left the magazine and shipping confirmation in our neighbors garbage can in the back alley. Guess we need camera’s!

We had two Amazon packages stolen from our front porch this December. It was the first time in the 2 years we’ve been living in Churchill.

CH is inner city! Why do any of you think it is any different in any other inner city neighborhood in the country?? Do not have your packages delivered to your homes!! If packages were not left on porches, they wouldn’t be stolen! Does it stink, we can’t haven delivered, yes! But CH is not there yet!

Julia Horrocks 02/11/2015 at 1:56 PM

Urban Farmhouse and Urban Market – would you be willing to accept package for CH residents for a small fee?

Reply
Anon 02/11/2015 at 2:11 PM

That isn’t a solution to the problem Julia. We never will be there unfortunately if we don’t band together and force the police to patrol more and actually catch these criminals. It is not acceptable that petty thieves are only caught once every 40 to 50 times. It needs to be every time. All having packages delivered elsewhere will do is make the crimes either escalate or forced into different communities. The solution is getting the criminals off the streets and making sure an arrest is made. My question is why have none of the police officers in the community told us their stance on how to make our homes safer….that should speak louder than the images in these videos.

Julia
I have packages delivered to my house all the time and they are fine– I just think it depends on your block. We have our “resident mayor” Eugene who makes sure that your packages stay secure. But I know not everyone has that luxury.

Anon 02/11/2015 at 2:21 PM

Also, how about fingerprinting that railing and running it through the database? Some of these guys have to have a rap sheet.

Julia H 02/11/2015 at 3:33 PM

Anon, where are you getting your information? Please provide proof to your argument that if residents stop leaving packages out, it will escalate crime and spread to other neighborhoods?

this guy should be easy to identify. he probably wears that cap and jacket regularly. I would leave him a package with some goodies in it along with a brick so that he will think that he hit the jackpot. more than likely he lives near by and walks in that area a lot…………….and where can we purchase those cameras, the quality is excellent. if that guy had jus looked up.

While I am all for more enforcement and more patrols, until that happens, you still need to get your stuff. While this may not work for everyone, this is what I do:

1. To the extent it is possible, I have everything sent to the office that does not fit into the delivery slot on the locking mailbox on the porch. I strongly encourage the locking mailbox.

2. On those occasions where a package is not coming to my office, I set an alert with the tracking number on the delivery service’s website. When they drop the package, I get an email or text so I know to run by the house (fortunately I work less than 10 minutes away) and grab the box from the porch–hopefully faster than a thief notices it.

I did call the non emergency number after I saw this ( which was 30 minutes after I saw him during my dog walk ) . Police were going to head to the park to look for him.

You know, the Chinese had a problem with mauraders back in 700 BC and solved it with building the Great Wall of China. Do we need a Great Wall of Richmond running down 25th st? Thoughts?

Cameras mounted high are great for full body shots, clothing and to catch someone in the act. It’d be nice to see a camera cleverly mounted/hidden at eye level so you could actually see a face.

I’ve had TWO packages stolen off my front porch in the past 4 days. This is the first time in four years that I’ve had a problem with package theft on the 2700 block of E. Broad. I would advise anyone having packages delivered in the area to either have them delivered to a different location or leave a note for the carrier asking them to NOT deliver the package.
I’m glad I saw this. I will be calling the police. This dude owes me a dress and 6 months worth of contact lenses. *MAN* I’m frustrated!
I hope he looks good in my dress….

@Laska – it was not near Libby, 500 block of N 26th St

@Anon – Richmond Police told me they wouldn’t be able to get any usable fingerprints off that surface.

@rita – Camera’s are Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I, great quality at 1080p. You can get them on Amazon, just make sure you’re buying (confirm w/ seller) the American and not Chinese version.

This thief (asshole) didn’t get anything of high value (I’m sure he ditched the items in a trash can somewhere close by).

I’ve been in my house for 7 years now, and while I’ve had my crawlspace broken into several times, packages stolen off my porch really haven’t been an issue. I just installed the cameras 2-3 weeks ago after having a package stolen, so this is the 2nd time I’ve been hit in a month. And I really didn’t expect to have to send in two separate videos to CHPN of two different crimes.

If I didn’t see the post on here about the thefts from shed/rv on Monday, I would never have checked or noticed that guy walking through my yard with the stolen chainsaw and toolkit. So I just want to thank John for this incredibly useful resource/website for getting information out.

I know most Amazon purchases come through a third party delivery service, but anything that is delivered through UPS or FedEx can be tracked closely (even if you don’t know a package is coming) using your address/name via their apps. You can also specify a specific delivery spot – I ask them to put my packages behind the column on my porch so they’re harder to see from the sidewalk.

Lee 02/12/2015 at 8:11 AM

I’ve heard it’s possible to request that packages be placed behind the building – or that you can leave more complex instructions. We’ve discussed the possibility of having a pass code lock to get into the lobby of our building – the passcode could also be included in the package delivery instructions so the driver could leave the code in the locked common area. Anyone know about doing something like this?

Thank goodness for this site. I’ve been having deliveries several times a week since buying on 21st street in July. Had a box of vinegars sent from CA for my BD two weeks ago. Package gone. Now I understand… even on super high-traffic streets, this can happen. Back to office deliveries or post office holds.

Lee, you can do all of those things through UPS MyChoice (and I think FedEx’s similar program, though I don’t use it as much). http://www.ups.com/mychoice/welcome.html

I think I’m more scared of you guys than the petty thieves in the neighborhood.

“Shoot this moron”

“If we can’t shoot him then chop off his looting hand”

“Anybody walking down the street with a package in hand needs to be considered suspicious.”

“Do we need a Great Wall of Richmond running down 25th st?”

“I’d like to see what knocking the thief’s teeth out looks like.”

Jesus.

J- It’s just people voicing their frustrations about a common problem that is very difficult to solve. Can’t blame them.

Reply
Neighbor 02/12/2015 at 2:08 PM

If catching criminals were more prevalent and sentences harsher we wouldn’t be having this problem.

Reply
Bill 3 02/12/2015 at 2:28 PM

J – work your tail off 40, 50, 60 hours a week to be able to afford something nice for your kids, spouse, etc. & then watch said gift be taken off your porch by some lazy punk. This is a very common problem & I think the anger is justified.

Reply
DA 02/12/2015 at 2:43 PM

Sure sure, anger and a sense of violation. I’ve been robbed, I know the feeling. The language is hyperbolic, you must admit, though.

There is a leap from “damn this guy stole my new George Forman Grill and it sucks” to “shoot this moron”. You see that, right?

@ #56, It seems sharia law is alive and well in Church Hill.

While I think the thief is an a**hole, I also think the expectation of safe packages on ones porch in an urban setting is optimistic. Just like leaving car or house doors unlocked and expecting people not to take advantage of them. If one wants ones stuff to remain unmolested, perhaps one should not have lonely, vulnerable packages delivered to ones unattended porch.

I imagine I’ll be vilified for this post, but there are always going to be thieves. To expect them to not steal from an easy target is naïve.

Trish 02/12/2015 at 6:47 PM

We have sort of bulky rocking chairs on our porch, and USPS/UPS/FedEx knows to tuck packages behind them. Thieves are incredibly lazy and go for the easy pickings, they don’t like to work for it, and in moving those chairs they’d have to work for it.

Amber 03/05/2015 at 9:53 PM

A package was stolen from my porch today on the 32nd block of East Marshall St. I found the remainder of the package torn apart in my back yard, books sent from my father had sleet and snow all over them. Not a pleasant sight to come home to.
