Starting last week, the City will began the process of replacing the 5th Street and 7th Street bridges over Leigh Street. Due to the construction, Leigh Street will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians, and parking between 4th Street and 8th Street until some time in August.
This is a little outside of our usual coverage area, but has a huge impact on getting anywhere via the MLK Bridge.

What a pain! Thanks for the heads up though
Nooooo! There goes my hope this was temporary. Thanks for the update
Well, it is “temporary,” just less temporary than you thought :-\
That’s the truth!

State emps received this info months ago. I don’t know why this is just going out to the public now..?
Such a major thoroughfare too. Aside from detour signs, none of the lights have been adjusted. Talking about a mess from 5-6p
This sucks.
August… that’s intense.
Lots of construction it seems, when trying to leave the Hill… Mech Tnpk ramp, there was some at the ramp at Broad the other day…
“@chpn: Leigh Street closed until August http://t.co/7zxCcOIyie” and now I must find a new route to classes. AWESOME.

@Laurie – I got the press release “City to Replace 5th Street Bridge and 7th Street Bridge” back on 12/19 but honestly didn’t read it at the time. Went digging for it this morning after realizing how much it bites to have Leigh Street closed.

I went to the Kroger on Broad via Leigh Street yesterday – detour no problem but coming back I came on up to Broad by MCV and had another detour at the railroad underpass – what was going on there they had both sides of Broad blocked there?
Sucks…I use Leigh Street often.
T0his afternoon I saw a lot of drivers losing their patience in the middle of the Farmer’s Market because of the Broad/Shockoe detour. It was pretty funny.
This is just insane. Yeah, it’s not that terrible most of the time but during the morning and evening rush hours this is completely untenable. It’s already way slower than necessary for me to get to VCU campus in the morning. With this plus Broad temporarily closed for water main repair, the city is basically trapping East Enders on the Hill. uugggghhhhh
Closer to home, does anyone know why Broad Street under the overpass near the I-95 entrance at 14th Street is closed (with horrible signage giving no warning)?
Maybe I can send Julian to school on the drone.
If you use Leigh between 4th and 8th, time to find another wormhole… http://t.co/Llcm0thbRv
Definitely annoying for the MCV /Jackson Ward pick ups.

Also a huge pain for the city hall employees trying to get out of the parking deck at rush hour.
As Michael-Birch Pierce already pointed out on Twitter, it was insufferable trying to head west from Church Hill this weekend while Broad and Leigh were both closed. This is no good.
It’s just the absolute worst, Tess Shebaylo!
Don’t forget that we are closed on Mondays, but if you’re headed downtown, watch out for closures on Broad & Leigh http://t.co/CzI6o1ikJH
I take Leigh to work everyday, headed there the route is OK, I just hop over to broad, on the way home it makes getting back to Church Hill painful. Good for RVA fixing things, but this makes my 15 min ride home to about 40-45 min.
The construction seems to be continuing. Any updates or a link where I can get an update on this project?
The City not meetings it’s commitments to have a project completed on time?! Color me surprised!
