Crime down from last year so far, but up in some areas

Given what seems to be a rash of crime across a swath of the area, I was curious to see how the data for the East End so far this year compared to last year. Want some numbers?

I pulled the “ALL CRIME TYPES” data from the Richmond Police Department’s Crime Incident Information Center for the period of January 1 – November 15 for 2013 and 2014 for the 17 neighborhoods that are covered to some degree here on CHPN.

Short answer: the total number of reported incidents is down about 5.4% (from 4,723 in 2013 to 4,470 in 2014).

This number is not even across the area, however. The number of incidents in Fairfield, Mosby, and Whitcomb is way down – almost 21% (to 1,124 from 1,416). Church Hill, Church Hill North, Oakwood, Oakwood Cemetery, and Union Hill, however, have collectively seen an increase of just over 13% (from 1,091 to 1,265).

Notably, at this time last year there had been 8 homicides in the East End but only 4 so far in 2014.
