Clean-up this Saturday at Sugar Pad and Gillies Creek Park

The East End Company’s Comin’ Clean-Up Initiative kicks off this Saturday at Sugar Pad and Gillies Creek Park:

Please join Replenish Richmond, the RVA Green Team and the Clean City Commission this Saturday (9/20 from 8am to noon) at the Sugar Pad and Gillies Creek Park for an hour or two of cleaning up the riverfront and the park and learning about upcoming improvements.

Saturday’s gathering is the inaugural event of the East End Company’s Comin’ Clean-Up Initiative, a year long effort to transform the East End in advance of next year’s World Cycling Championships.

Participants on Saturday are asked to BRING GLOVES and come first to the Sugar Pad to be registered and assigned a clean-up responsibility. Street parking on East Main Street above the Sugar Pad. RSVP’s are appreciated so we can plan the work and provide refreshments.

I support clean-ups but I’m surprised that I haven’t heard about this before now. Greater Fulton is active in Gillies Creek improvements so one would hope for some outreach during the planning of an event like this. I hope future efforts engage the communities where the action takes place. We welcome people and improvements to our community and really appreciate being included in planning and outreach of events that take place in our neighborhood. The good that comes from these initiatives stems not only from picking up the trash but from personal engagement of participants from all areas. Hopefully it will be successful and the results will be long-lasting and deeper than a temporary trash pickup.
