The World Road Cycling Championships are coming to Richmond for eight days in September 2015, and the most spectacular part of the Road Circuit course may just be Libby Hill. The Elite riders will get as far north into the neighborhood as Broad Street, and will climb both the cobblestones of Libby Hill and the steep hill at 23rd Street next to Bellevue Elementary.
The same courses will be used this May for the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships.
The World Road Cycling Championships is cycling’s pinnacle event, held annually in an international city as chosen by the Union Cycliste Internationale through a competitive bidding process similar to the Olympic Games. The nine-day event features 12 Championship races, with World Champions crowned in each discipline.
When the race comes to Richmond in 2015 it will be covered by more than 500 media outlets from around the world and broadcast live to a global audience of more than 300 million people.
