The new Alden/Need Supply Co.’s collaboration is a pricy nod to Union Hill:
“It’s named after our favorite historic neighborhood in Richmond that has a mix of antebellum, Victorian, classic revival and modern architecture,” says Need Supply’s community and public relations manager Molly Szkotak, adding that the functional styling is perfect for braving the neighborhood’s cobblestone streets.

This is pretty cool to see. Alden makes great shoes that, while they are on the high end price-wise, are well worth the price if you can swing it.
I sent back a 30+ year old pair of their shoes recently and they made them good as new for no charge.
Interesting trivia – the model that these are based on was the boot worn by Harrison Ford in all the Indiana Jones movies.

Take the cost of what you’d spend on cheaply made Chinese shoes over the next 10-20 years and it’s a lot less than one well made resoleable pair of shoes. It is a lot upfront but as someone who’s owned a couple pairs of Aldens they’re a good investment.
When they wear down, you can pay a couple bucks and get them back to good as new. When your $50 Chinese shoes wear out in a year, they’re straight to the trash. And as an added bonus, you’re creating good paying American jobs.

Good to know, Alex. We’ve certainly become “trained” to expect products at ridiculous prices thanks to the McDonals/Wal-Mart mindset of today. I’ll keep this brand in mind the next time I need some new boots. Sounds similar to what the guys down at Shockoe Denim are doing. Real quality comes at a price.
@7 – though they have no connection to Church Hill, I’d also recommend Quoddy and Rancourt shoes as well when you’re looking. Both create decent jobs here in America and make a good product. These two tend to be a little more casual whereas Alden has mostly a dress line. You can find them for about half the price of this boot.
Can anyone in Union Hill afford these shoes?

For anyone drooling over these but hung up on the price tag, I’d also recommend LL Bean’s Katahdin Iron Works boots. They’re also US made and long lasting but at a fraction of the price (list of $200 and LL Bean frequently runs sales)…
