Old House Diaries: Before and After on 23rd Street

The Richmond-based Old House Authority’s Old House Diaries, “a national record of the living history of old houses”, has got some great information about properties in the area.

The entry for 701 North 23rd Street, for example, includes the astounding photo seen above of the 1848 house collapsed and spilled out into the street (LARGER). Everything can be saved…

Search the area to see what you can find and then ADD YOUR HOUSE. A current photo or set of photos helps record a snapshot of right now that will really add meaning to the collection.

The vacant house at 2008 Fairmount Avenue burned dramatically in 2007. In 2009, it was an award-winning rehab.

Most of these images are in HRF’s and other books on Church Hill. Also can be found at the Library of Virginia and the Valentine Musuem.
