Homicide on Cedar Street

This is the first killing in both the East End and Richmond in 2014, and the first in Union Hill since 2009.

UPDATE (10:57PM): not a shooting.


wtvr is also reporting a shooting earlier in the day in Whitcomb:

Police responded to calls for multiple gunshots at 5:05a.m., Sunday on the 2300 block of [Bethel Street] According to Lt. Bender, Richmond Police, when units arrived they found a black male, age 28, shot in the chest […] with life threatening injuries.

From the RPD:

Richmond Police detectives are in the early stages of a homicide investigation.

At approximately 4:41 p.m. this afternoon, a family member found a female unresponsive in an apartment in the 1900 block of Cedar Street and called police.

Officers arrived within one minute. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Detectives have a person of interest in custody at this time and currently are not looking for additional suspects.

The investigation continues.

sad…but when you live in a neighborhood shoots more guns than firecrackers on New Years…i guess this comes with the territory.

A Richmond family is in disbelief after Emma Cook, a great grandmother in her 70’s, was found dead Sunday evening. Police are now investigating Cook’s death as a homicide, and have a person of interest in custody. […] Dozens of relatives and friends gathered, as officers investigated, mourning the loss of someone so well-loved in her community. Many knew Cook as “Miss Emma.” Her family says she worked as a custodian at Richmond Public Schools for years.

At approximately 4:41 p.m., officers were called to the 1900 block of Cedar Street for the report of a person down.

Officers arrived and found Emma B. Cook, 78, of the 1900 block of Cedar Street, dead from an apparent stab wound.

Detectives quickly developed leads in the investigation, including the fact that the victim’s vehicle was missing. Patrol officers spotted the vehicle at a hotel in the 2600 block of Chamberlayne Avenue last night.

Patrol officers and detectives coordinated efforts and arrested the suspect, the victim’s son, Ronnie S. Cook, 44, of no known address, at the hotel without incident. Cook has been charged with murder, robbery and grand larceny. His photo is attached.

Detectives ask anyone with further information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both methods are anonymous.

This sounds like a very sad story, but at least the police quickly apprehended the suspect. Keep up the good work RPD!
