Richmond 2015 likely to climb Libby Hill

While the Richmond 2015 World Road Cycling Championships course route won’t likely be announced until late February or March, it has been assumed that the race will have to come through the area in some fashion. Richmond 2015 all but confirmed this when they posted a photo of professional cyclist Ben King of Team Garmin-Sharp at Libby Hill.

The World Road Cycling Championships will be in Richmond September 19-27, 2015, and will feature 12 races with more than 1,500 athletes. The event is anticipated to be covered by more than 500 media outlets and broadcast live to an audience of more than 300 million people.

The National Collegiate Championships will be held on the same courses in May 2014 as a preview event.

Recent World Road Cycling Championships have been held in such cities as Lisbon, Verona, Madrid, Stuttgart, Melbourne, Copenhagen, and Florence. The 2014 event will be in 2014 Ponferrada, Spain.

The 1994 Tour DuPont made notable use of the area’s hills and the Libby Hill climb was a feature of the U.S. Open Cycling Championship race.

There was a bike race about 5 or 6 years ago that started in williamsburg and then made multiple laps of richmond via the winding cobblestones on Libby hill.

The bottom picture is George Hincapie heading up 23rd, though. Tour DuPont or Tour de Trump. Not sure which year.

Time to buy your authentic cow bells. No race is complete without them!
