New MLK set to open in January

The new MLK Middle School is set to open January 6:

The new Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School has two notable connections to the decrepit old school it will soon replace in the East End of Richmond.

One of them — reuse of the old auditorium — city officials couldn’t tout enough during a walking tour of the $41 million school Wednesday.

The other — an academic program that has been among the worst in the state based on Standards of Learning exams — school officials were promising to fix as fast as possible.

Here is where you tell adolescent boys “don’t get girls pregnant.” Here is where you tell adolescent girls “don’t get pregnant.” I sincerely hope the new MLKMS gets that message across.

I hope the community is asking administrators and school reps exactly where the new improvement plan is? What is going to be done differently in January 2014? What is happening now is failing for all parties involved. Our children deserve better than what is being offered. That goes for those tough-skinned employees as well.
