Anybody missing this dog?

This sweet boy has been hanging out on our porch and the rest of our block – 32nd and Q. He is young and loves to play with other dogs. We have called animal control, and no surprise, no one has come. He runs when we try to put a collar on him.

Does Animal Control take dogs to the SPCA?

Noooo! I saw this guy following the cops around last night after that ‘incident’ on Q st between 31st and 32nd. I’ve been thinking of taking him. Anyone know what animal control does with dogs once they pick them up??

Animal control will keep the dog for awhile, try to adopt him out. The new ‘director’ works very hard to not euthanize pets, but animal control does kill some of them. Contact them and keep in touch with them tracking the fate of this cutie.

No, animal control does not euthanize adoptable, treatable or rehabilitatable animals as a rule.
Animals get held for a set amount of time for the owner to come claim it, and if not claimed, after that the pet is put up for adoption.
From there, it can go to a foster home (yes, you can foster for animal control!), get adopted, or be pulled and put up for fostering and adoption through another organization such as AARF or Angel Dogs or if its a cat, Cats Cradle for example.
If the dog was evaluated and found to be food aggressive, for example, they would find an experienced foster to work with it.
If it was examined by a licensed veterinarian and found to have stages four cancer, then yes, it would probably be euthanized.
It’s mostly common sense folks.

Again, there does have to be an organization to aid in compassionate care for animals and to care for the health of the community and that sometimes includes euthanasia.
Anyone heard of rabies? How about dog maulings of children? Feral cats classified as the worlds worst invasive species?

I know I like to see domestic pets play in traffic and hunt native birds to critical levels as much as the next guy, but its not the 1990’s anymore guys. Let’s get it together around here.

I know AC holds dogs for 10 days if they have a collar. If the dog does not have a collar and is obviously a stray or abandoned, I think the official hold period is shorter. Richmond Animal Conteol is located at 1600 Chamberlayne Avenue and the phone number is 646-5573.

Lucky Canine is correct. Animal control will not hold “adoptable” dog indefinately and I think that 10 days is the limit.

Right, they hold a collared pet for ten days for an OWNER to CLAIM it. Uncollared pets, the hold for owners is five days.

After that, it gets put up for adoption or fostering to the public.

That way, if someone loses a pet there is a central location they can go to check and see if its been found and they have about a week to get it back, if they seriously want it back.
