Can anyone help build a Little Free Library?

@rivercityreadin: Anyone in Church Hill have the skills to build a Little Free Library? I will keep that thing stocked. http://tinyurl.com/mkbpm75

I’ve heard from a volunteer who will pay for this. If anyone wants to take on the carpentry work, drop your contact info below and I’ll put you in touch.

The folks at WPA Bakery expressed interested a while back about getting one of these outside.

I’d imagine that the area is probably big enough to have a few of these. Love this idea.

Maybe you can contact CHAT (Church Hill Activities & Tutoring) to see if their Nehemiah’s Workshop program can help build one. Have you thought about contacting them? Seems like a good project for the kids to build.

What a fantastic idea!!

I have loads of paperbacks, paint, etc. If someone would build it they could drop it off at my house to be painted, roofed etc. I have a well known brother-in-law who is a roofer and there are always leftovers from jobs!!

Lets not let this drop!!

I have some articles on folks who did this in their towns! Please let me know when and where a meeting is organized to plan this!

This sounds like a great Eagle scout project.

I am so glad that the neighborhood is providing such positive comments for the Little Free Library1 I am currently having one built. Thought I would start it out with adult fiction and children’s books that relate to fire trucks and Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Since I live with and next to both! I do hope that our neighborhood will be supportive and we will have a wide variety of materials to share with each other!

Can someone tell me how this works? Is there a theme to each Little Free Library location?

I’m so excited that this is getting such a great response! I’ve always wanted one nearby, but since I started a book blog I have so many advance copies of books that can’t be sold (even to used stores) – I need somewhere for them to go!

Lucky Canine, someone else on Twitter mentioned to me that they had Eagle Scouts in their area building them, anyone know a good contact?

Eds, this is the FAQ from the site: http://www.littlefreelibrary.org/faqs.html
There are different styles of libraries you can build, but it’s pretty much up to the community!

I have applied to register a Little
Free Library at 26th and Broad St. on the side of Captain Buzzy’s so that when we go to get a glass of wine we will have something to read!

It will be ready in about two weeks (if the building owner does not object) and if you would like to donate books, keep your eyes out for the grand opening.

Hey everybody!

We’ve been moving slowly on this this at WPA ever since we saw the Little Free Library at Black Hand. Love the idea and community support. Keep an eye out on our Marshall Street side for an LFL sometime soon.

I would love to design and build this micro library. I have experience with wood and metal working and am available to do it pretty much anytime. If you still are in need of anyone give me a call: 804 332 3388. I have work samples.

This is a wonderful project! I wonder if you would have any trouble getting CAR to approve the structure?

The materials used will be appropriate for the neighborhood. The colors used have already been approved by CAR. You can look at my house to see the colors. We do not need CAR approval. All of the approvals needed have been obtained. I think you are going to really like it!!

Here are some thoughts about our little free library. Please share your thoughts and ideas.

1 build it low so the bottom shelf can be the children’s section at child height.
2 have a shelf for magazines like Architectural Digest , Better Homes and Gardens and other high end publications.
3 have a space on one of the shelves to leave receips that are outstanding, unusual, or are family heirlooms.
4 Have a basket attached to the side with a sign, ” have too many herbs? leave some for your neighbors ”

If any one wants to donate magazines or books, leave them on my front porch.

If anyone has ideas on how to make this better, or even more of a benefit for our neighborhood, please share!!

This Little Free Library should be up by Saturday, August 17th. if not before.

Jean, can you share your address/contact info? I have a stack of books ready to go!

I’d love to see one at WPA, too. The more, the merrier!

I agree, the more, the merrier! Good excuse to walk over to WPA to “check out the library!!” Call me at 780-3521

Also if anyone needs building materials, I am a serious scavenger/saver.
