All the best to SubRosa AND the folks who lived above in the apartment. Any news on them?

Damn.

How can we help?

Everyone got out of the building safely. The firemen were there ASAP and thankfully put out the fire quickly. It looked as though it started outside then spread up to the roof, the bakery itself was not on fire.

I just saw Evin outside of Sub Rosa. She said that the idea is to get the building back up to code and get the bakery open again. The bakery space itself looks untouched, the damage is the apartments upstairs.

All of the folks from the apartments are displaced. If you’ve met Tony, a quiet older man & photographer, it sounds like he’s at the Red Cross. No word on his equipment.

Unless I am mis-remembering, they also did commercial trade baking in addition to the retail operation. I hope someone else in the profession will lend them some workspace so they can continue to service their commercial contracts while they rebuild.

Drove by on my way to work a few minutes ago. From the outside the upstairs apartment looks ruined but the bakery itself looks untouched. Of course, structurally it could be dangerous, but hopefully the lower part and the ceiling are structurally sound or are able to made so, so that these guys can get back to serving the community. The place was doing gangbusters.

Friends & Neighbors– I’ve set up a campaign to help get Evin and Evrim (and their tenants) back up on their feet! Please contribute and share!

My friend Alison lived in one of the apartments above the bakery. She and her roommate are okay and managed to get her 3 cats outside but as of now they are still missing. Wednesday is solid black, Little Man is a tall, skinny orange tabby, and Boy is white with orange patches. If you hear about or see any of them please get in touch.

If anyone has any info on how to help out the residents of the apartments (sounds like the Red Cross is a start), please keep us posted!

Does anyone know how to reach out to these displaced tenants? I received word from someone who can help find them a new apartment or some temporary living arrangements, either way they could stay in Church Hill.

It’s such a shame to hear the recent unfortunate events affecting some of our neighbors and such a great (and delicious) neighborhood business. Those of us on the Hill Topper 5k Planning Committee would like to help both the displaced residents and Sub Rosa, who was one of our gracious 5k Sponsors this year. In addition to making a donation with some of our additional proceeds, we’d also like to help raise additional money for this charitable effort.

We ordered WAY TOO MANY 5k t-shirts this year, and we’d like to offer to sell our extras (over 200 of them) to anyone interested and donate 100% of our sales to the displaced residents and Sub Rosa. Our shirt features Sub Rosa’s logo on the back in addition to many other great businesses and entities within/linked to this wonderful neighborhood. So you can wear your t-shirt with pride as a sign of neighborhood solidarity and support that we all look out for one another. T-shirts are $10.

We’ll set up a table outside of Sub Rosa this Sunday (4/7) from 2:00 until 6:00 and the following Sunday (4/14) also from 2:00 to 6:00. If you can’t make either of those dates and times, please email us at info@thehilltopper5k.com to make alternative arrangements.

Thanks!
The Hill Topper 5k Planning Committee

P.S. John, if we send you a file, can you post our t-shirt design on the website so folks know what they’re buying?

Evrim is very passionate about what he’s built. He, Evin and and their baked beauty will be back as soon as humanly possible. Meanwhile, the groundswell of neighborhood and other support is simply awesome.

I saw this posted on Dutch & Co’s Facebook. Hope it’s okay to repost this.

Sub Rosa Pastries @ Dutch & Company
While we wanted to eat them all ourselves,
we decided to share the wealth.
Thursday, April, 4th, 2013
11am-2pm
Suggested Donation (cash only)
All proceeds go to Sub Rosa
The ever gracious Evin & Evrim dropped off the last batch of pastries waiting to be baked off at Dutch & Company. We couldn’t think of a better way to help out fellow business owners and dear friends by being a temporary outpost.

T H I S is the Church Hill I know!!! I mistakingly thought it was gone based on recent “discussions” on this site. Thank you everyone for setting me straight!!! When my nephews came for a visit, I always rook them to “the number one fire station” in Virginia and they got to see everything. Those firemen are the best.

I feel so sad about the fire, but I am so so so proud of my neighbors and neighborhood!!!!

John/ CHPN- Would it be possible to put Ashley’s comment (#42) as a separate post so people can get the word out about the missing pets? With over 70 comments, I’m afraid that important message will get lost.

Ashley- can you let us know HOW to get in touch? I will definitely keep my eye out!
